Neat article.. except the author doesn't know how an oil bath air filter works.. and it's clear in the first paragraph that he does not... It should be clear to -anyone- with any sort of physics background that the author does not know how an oil bath filter works.

But there is truth in his assumption that oil bath ar cleaners become less effecient and more restrictive as intake air velocity increases due to flow direction changes mandated by oil bath filter design. EZ... build a oil bath filter large enough to make up for full flow losses for the specific engine application.

Sounds reasonable enough, but after you have reinvented the wheel what have you gained? 1) Larger envelope, 2) Additional used oil, 3) Additional use of petroleum resources, 4) Additional engineering requirements (ie. Donaldson has done the math and has retrofit air cleaners for almost all applications), 5) Higher maintenance - in both labor costs and frequency of service.
That said, I can't think of any current engine manufacturer that uses an oil bath air cleaner anymore, from Briggs & Stratton to Sulzer.
But if you want to use an oil bath air cleaner, go right ahead.

First one that comes to mind is the JM554. Perkins-licensed engine I think. Besides obviously hanging off the side of the engine (instead of hidden up in front of the radiator) I found it interesting that the intake runner passes through a hole in the loader frame

WOW! I haven't seen that one. Sounds very special.
But Greg, by your own admission, these tractors use '60's technology, which actually doesn't surprise me all that much to find an oil bath cleaner here or there.

Greg is right.
My buddy Scott got a 2008 JM554 when I got Loretta's tractor. His intake goes through a hole in the loader tower just like Greg said! Another thing is that my 2005 Kama 554 has the conventional air filter in front of the radiator under the hood. Brad's Kama 554 has an oil bath air filter. I think his might be a 2006?

Don't get me wrong, I think Greg is very knowledgeable and a credible source of information. What I know about Chinese wheeled tractors you could put in your eye, and I'll be the first to admit it. I was speaking in general terms about industry trends and current standards, which is saying that Chinese tractors, dozers included, do not always follow, and I can personally attest to that (my dozer used to have the air filter right in back of the radiator fan-would plug solid in an hour of dusty conditions).
I would really like to see a picture of that air intake system that goes through the loader tower. Not that I disbelieve it, I'm just really curious. It sounds like they engineered the wrong part.

I took these photos when the crate tractors arrived.
The first on is of his JM554 coming off the container. You can see the hole in the FEL tower.
That's for the air intake.
The next one is of it with the air filter assembled ... intake through that darned hole!!

I think that is a very unique but exposed location for an air filter. I don't think I would have designed it that way. Thanks for the pics. Wow.
