I agree with you Bob. That feature alone, would have had me shopping for another tractor. To be fair, Rob's example is of a crate tractor. That's something that was probably not noticed prior to purchase (but at the same time is a good argument to buy an assembled tractor).

Assuming the breather is inside the wheel width and bucket width, it's got some protection - up against the side of a building for example. But I do a lot of work in/around woodlots. I'm sure I'd have knocked it off within the first month.

Is the air filter an option with the loader or with the tractor?:D

Best I can figure, an oil bath air filter is standard equipment. The optional loader is then factory-adapted to accommodate the side-mounted breather.

What's interesting is that there are 2 kinds of air filters being used such as Brad's and my Kama 554's.
Greg, you're right about the side mounted stuff, even if it's well protected. I work in wooded areas too and in my experience, just about everything outside the cab gets knocked off. I've even had branches reach inside to grab stuff!!:)

Trends?

Trend nowadays is to make things cheaply.. that don't last.

Ever notice that those old tractors from the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's are still around, and can do work.

Take an 'off the shelf' cut from any of the big 3.. work it hard and don't maintain it well,.. and fast forward 50-60 years.... I doub't it will still exist anymore.

Rob,
Don't get me wrong, I think Greg is very knowledgeable and a credible source of information. What I know about Chinese wheeled tractors you could put in your eye, and I'll be the first to admit it. I was speaking in general terms about industry trends and current standards, which is saying that Chinese tractors, dozers included, do not always follow, and I can personally attest to that (my dozer used to have the air filter right in back of the radiator fan-would plug solid in an hour of dusty conditions).
I would really like to see a picture of that air intake system that goes through the loader tower. Not that I disbelieve it, I'm just really curious. It sounds like they engineered the wrong part.

Most, if not all, of the older tractors were manufactured in an era before "quality control" and "planned obsolescence" were household words. The phrase "They don't build 'em like they used to" is somewhat ironic in that in some cases that's a good thing. Like it or not, things will evolve. It is the nature of man.

Planned obselescence is the problem.

Tractor companies don't want to sell you a tractor that will last 50 ys.. they want to sell you one that will last maybee a decade or two at most..
