In Texas it can get you a fine because the mockingbird is our state bird. However, bluejays are bossy birds that lots of people hate because they run off smaller birds.

Mockingbirds are the Texas State Bird???
Did not know that.
They are the Florida State Bird too, bad choice though.......this one had beaten off all the other birds around the feeders for the last two weeks as he moved in and took over the territority attacking every other bird that came near. Not to mention the attacks on my wife as she walked down to the horse stables to feed the horses everyday. I think this avian terrorist needed to be taken down for home garden security purposes.

There used to be a mocking bird that terrorized my shorthair every time I let him outside. It would swoop down and smack him on the head. It got to the point that he would wait on the deck and look around to see if that stupid bird was around.
One day I decided to help him out. We went outside together and sure enough here comes that mocking bird. I shot it with my shot gun and my dog ran over and picked it up and shook it really hard for about 10 minutes.
When he was done, that bird was shredded. I remember the look he gave me too. It was like he said "thanks".
We still have mocking birds around but they don't seem to bother the dogs I have now.

Yep! If mockingbirds weren't protected, there probably wouldn't be many of them around. They can be a constant irritant. I'm sure they are good for something, but I know they can be nasty pests too.

I had to look this up...
Mockingbirds used to be kept as pets so that people could listen to the birds sing.
I have seen a few Mockingbirds at our place but they have not been a problem. Now the male Cardinal is a different story.
