For those who might be interested.

The plane was expensive to operate and had limited route application.

I was surprised. Outfitted in an economy only configuration it could carry 850 passengers!

Their was a reason Boeing never played in that pool. The single level wide body must have it beat.

This guy has good info. The 777x and 737max updates have been fun to watch.

What a massive failure. But apparently Airbus is doing alright.

I have travelled on a 380 and some of the smaller ones and found the climb rate amazing compared to Boeing, wheels off the ground and just watch earth disappear from beneath you.
Fast too but still the hold pattern ensures you will never arrive on time.

The A380 was a product designed based on Airbus bet on an airport 'hub and spoke' model where many passengers could be moved from very large international airports 'Hubs' and then take a second flight with much smaller airplanes reaching the many small airports.

Boeing bet on the traveller preferring 'point to point' travel wherever possible thus chose a smaller design (777) with long range capability that could reach many smaller airports non-stop. The A380 would have too much extra capacity. This severely limited their demand and thus the short production run.

I was working for the largest air freight company in the world when they ordered many A380's (forget the exact number now) based upon their stated performance and from what was seen at the Paris Air Show. Plans were made, hangars built, special equipment purchased to handle these behemoths and then it was discovered that Airbus was flying around (demo) an uncertified aircraft. The wing was never fully certified and in fact failed certification testing and had to be redesigned. I was told there would be a two year delay because of this. We ended up cancelling the order and bought triple 7's instead. As a comparison, we could park two 777's wingtip to wingtip in the A380 hangar. Big bird but didn't carry as much fuel as a freighter needed.(my opinion).

That about cover it. Too bad there's the 737 fiasco going on now, though. Airbus makes smaller planes to compete with that, and as long as the 737 issues continue, it's to Airbus's advantage on the shorter routes.

The A-310, A-340, and now A-380.....all duds!

The A320/321, and A-330 are very successful.
A-350.....too soon to tell.
