AIRPLANE NUTS?

Re: AIRPLANE NUTS?

My Dad was a pilot on a B-24 also stationed in Italy 1944-45. He was there at right up to the fall of Germany. Shortly after that he went on to B-29 pilot training. I have many pictures and various clippings my mom put in a srap book. I'll dig up a great picture of him and his crew and post it in another post. With the WWII memorial being dedicated this weekend, there are a lot of WWII memories being stirred up. I flew in a B-24 a few years ago. It was an incredible experience. Awesome!

Re: AIRPLANE NUTS?

Jim, I flew in the Collins Foundation B-24 that flies all over the country. You can fly with them for a price. I was treated by my brother-in-law who accompanied me as well. It was just here a couple of weeks ago. The attached picture is one I took out the side gunner door over Lake Shasta here in Northern California several years ago. You can also fly in a restored B-17. Mark

Re: AIRPLANE NUTS?

I look at this as a once in a lifetime opportunity. These old birds aren't getting any younger and the costs associated with keeping them flying is enormous.

I am not familiar with the show in Genesseo. Is it a military or general show? The shows at Mcguire Air Force Base and Willow Grove Naval Air Base were top of the line. Got to tour inside a B52, AWACS, the hugh cargo planes, flying tankers. Also got to get inside an M1 Abrams tank and walk around the stealth fighter and bomber. The shows were suspended after 9/11 and I don't believe either has resumed. The bases are a little preoccupied with other things now.

Dave
I was also at Leesburg last week to look at the warbirds. It's awesome that you went up in the B-17. I too think it's a rare opportunity to get to ride in one of those planes. My Grandfather was in a B-17 squadron in WWII in England. I would love the chance to take my Dad up for a ride while it's still possible. My airline furlough may be ending this summer....maybe finances will be in better order then!

Went to the new Air & Space at Dulles today. Actual aircraft on display: B-29, SR-71, B-707, Concorde, Space Shuttle, P-47, P-40, F-4U Corssair, FW-190 and many more in person. An awesome sight up close!
I could talk airplanes all day long!

Re: AIRPLANE NUTS?

Sorry i did not reply sooner, but we were gone for a few days. the show in genesso ny is a general show, but heavy on the military. of course this depends on the year, and who can attend at that time. i have been there a few times and have never been dissapointed.

Re: AIRPLANE NUTS?

Frank, that's a P39 AirCobra - underpowered, early WWII, but with a 40mm cannon in the nose.

They were produced 1938-42 mostly. Not a terribly popular ship with it's crews.

Re: AIRPLANE NUTS?

HELLO TO ALL,
the p39 was one of the aircraft that chuck yeager trained on.
there was a song that went with it. "don't give me a p39, with
the engine mounted behind, it will tumble, and roll, and dig a
big hole, don't give me a p39." one other problem with it, the
door was like a car door, and opened into the windstream, so
it was difficult to bailout. yeager said he would have gone to
war in one, but it was underpowered. we gave them to russia,
and they loved them.

Interesting Accordionman, Chuck Yeager doesn't live to far from me from what I am told.
