There was a guy selling some recapped aircraft tires on rims for a skidsteer. He used them for one season to plow snow. The listing said that at even 0 psi there was no sidewall crush.

At that point I start wondering how they ride. I have solid tires now that those things will rattle your teeth out. I've had foam filled in the past and they're not much better.

With the 20 or so plies you don't need inner tubes and be sure your cushion is soft.
I'm sure they must be very like foam filled.

There's hardly a tougher tire than an aircraft tire.

When a 747 takes off the tires get very hot and knowledgeable Captains leave the gear down for a bit to cool them before retracting.

You do if you fly into Hawaii, make the LONG taxi and have very hot tires at liftoff according to 4 former American captains I volunteer with at the Planes of Fame. So maybe YOU don't. They did, and also did that with DC-10's on hot days with long taxis when heavy. I also knew several who did that as a habit out of Phoenix Sky Harbor. They all claim it helped the recaps last longer and was safer than retracting a very hot tire and climbing into sub-zero temps. I very certainly never bothered with it in Cessna and Pipers! They were a lot of things, but big and heavy weren't in there anywhere and I didn't fly on recaps.

Perhaps you fly a northern route and don't have to worry about it. I have no dog in this hunt and am NOT trying to start anything. Obviously you don't have the same habits as some of the other people I know who flew the line. Nothing wrong with that.

I have been reading about airplane tires for some time now. I need to do something about flats. I read about how stiff they are and how you do not need to put air in them because they are so stiff.
So why would I want airplane tires over foam filled tires? It seems to me they would have the same down side as foam filled in having a hard ride.

That's fine, but the only time we are directed to leave the gear down after takeoff is for brake cooling to reduce the risk of excessive heat in the wheel well. Long taxi at high weights will increase brake temperature. So, I wouldn't be surprised if that is what they were speaking of when discussing discussing delayed gear retraction and high wheel temperatures.

I have been reading about airplane tires for some time now. I need to do something about flats. I read about how stiff they are and how you do not need to put air in them because they are so stiff.
So why would I want airplane tires over foam filled tires? It seems to me they would have the same down side as foam filled in having a hard ride.

I understand that foam filled tires will tend to get a set in them if the tractor sits for some time this developing flat spots. The company that I had looked at foam filling my tires used a different foam that supposedly does not do that. I decided to go with airplane tires instead. The cost was not that bad plus my original tires were pretty worn so I would have needed to purchase new tires prior to foaming them anyway. I didn't feel that was cost effective as new aircraft tires.

To bad some of you guys that want aircraft tires weren't local. I have a nice set of rear R4 that I'd be happy to trade for some good 16.9x28 (or 24) R1's. Both fronts didn't have any air in them and you couldn't tell on my 545. I don't know if the rears have air or not. I pulled a 3" bent up spike outta one rear and nothing happened. I took them off the 545 and put them on my BH. They didn't squat an 1". They're to small for the BH but after spending $800 on the new R1's for the 545, they'll work. I don't know why but the PO put one of the tires on backwards.
