So the guy that owned this house before me was apparently pretty big in the Fighting Game Cock business. Cages etc. all around the house. Unfortunately, I also think old traps for foxes and opossums etc. I have not found them, but I think my dog Sherco did.
Hanna wakes me up in the middle of the night, and says I need to come look at the dog, his paw is tore up. I go down to the basement, and my normally very upbeat dog is not so happy. I unwrap his paw that Hanna has wrapped and then worried about, and OMG, it hurt just to look at. All the bones are shattered and sticking out / up about at the "wrist" The paw is shredded lengthwise into three major pieces. All fur is gone, bones hanging out both ends and sides, bleeding pretty good...... Yep, this is a vet run for sure.
Call our vet, and we both get headed in. I am sure he deals with folks and their dogs who have a sniffle at 1 in the morning and want him to drive in, so he say's to me, do you really think I need to look at it? Uh, yeah... After he saw it, he agreed (one of those times I wish I was overreacting but the vet looks at it and says something along the lines of Oh God....)
The best quote was when my regular vet was looking at it the next morning (get the on-call vet at night) and I ask about X-rays,, He just looks at me and says, all the bones are sticking out, don't think I need an x-ray to figure that out.....
While they really take care of us, it was still a week in the vet before we could change the dressing without putting him under, so about $1300 later (did I mention this was I think the day after the tree falling on the truck?) We got Gimp dog back, uh, Sherco, with paw still attached, bone sticking out the top..........
So after about a month of healing, the bone was still sticking out the top, every time we would get it about closed, Sherco would worry off the bandage and then start licking and expose it. Somehow, I think it was bothering him.
Anyway, after about a month, Sherco decided he did not like the bone sticking out, so he chewed it off................ Now that, I had never seen
So, here is the pic of the paw at about 5 or 6 weeks. Almost healed, Short a bone or two though.
