All Hail AOL!!

Crazy isn't it? Wow, I thought I had heard some bad stories, I think this one takes the cake, Unbelievable, what nonsense. I pay $9.95 a month with my provider. It works better then neighbors who are for some reason using Always Off Line. While upgrading to AOL 9 or 10 or such, she commited a fatal error losing her identity. AOL will restablish the account once she establishes which credit card she opened the account with. Last I heard she's still looking through her plethora of cards. Seems like a difficult process. Rat.

The suits are wondering why they are loosing market share. In their mind they are doing all the new age techniques that are supposed to increase market share: aggressive marketing, aggressive customer relations, etc. The concept that people hate their stinking guts and want nothing to do with them is lost on them. The cd's, however, ARE good for hanging in the garden.

When my father passed away we had to provide a death certificate to lots of companies that he had contracts with. I believe there were over 20 of them. Very few would take our word for it that he passed away. However, we did not have to provide a copy of the will to any of them. It really is not such an awful thing. It keeps people from cheating on their contracts(not that your mother would, of course). It is just business.

As for AOL in general, I never liked their services, but this case does not seem so unreasonable, until you take into account the crack they made that only he could cancel the account after they were told he died of cancer. What they should have done was express their condolences and told her that all she had to do was send in a copy of the death certificate and the account would be immediately cancelled. AOL has not been known for their PR, that's for sure.

Sorry for your frustrations. Nobody needs that.

Sincerely,
David G.

I pay $21.95/mo. for whay I perceive to be better service. I travel often (currently in TX) and Earthlink has had a local access number in every town I've visited: small towns too. Unlike the low cost ISP that I had in the past, I've never had a busy signal. If anyone can confirm that I can get this type of service for $4.95/mo then maybe I'll save a few $$.

I had a near miss with this type of service when I found out that DirecTV was billing me for NFL Sunday Ticket. I called them to cancel, but they told me I couldn't since the account was in my wife's name. I informed them that the credit card is in my name and that they must deal with me if they wanted our business. After a pause, the agent said they would cancel the additional programming. BTW, the misses is alive & well, but I'll stop here instead of making a bad joke that would put me in the dog house.

I wish your mother-in-law the best of luck.

Here at home I pay $9.95/month for Juno and I have never not been able to get on. They have high speed, for dialup anyway, access.

SLOWLY BUT SURELY AOL is ringing their own death bell. could never understand why folks would spend that kind of $$$ when it can be had for 1/2 the amt. with better service.

Yeah, but they don't have a contract.
Change her phone number, and notify the post office of threatening letters.

Yeah, but they don't have a contract.

If you agree to use their service, you have a contract.

My only experience with AOL was a few years ago when someone got my Visa card number and charged two months of AOL service on it. When I called AOL to find out what the charge was and who made it, they refused to tell me anything about it. Needless to say, I had to cancel that card and get a new account with a new number. Then both AOL and the credit card company issued credits, so then I had to straighten out the double credit. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif And of course I have no idea how many AOL CDs I've thrown in the trash. I'm sure throwing those CDs away will be the limit of my experience with AOL in the future also.
