Oh, it was definitely a thing 20 years ago. That was when the ".com bubble" was inflating.

However, there was still a substantial percentage of people who didn't purchase home internet service (myself included, even though I was a computer programmer). So it probably didn't seem like it was a "thing" to a lot of people at the time.

I'm not saying bigfoot does exist, but regarding your 'hit by a car' reference... Just how many of the various mammals in your part of the country have you seen hit on the road? There are certainly TONS of things that actually do exist that you never see hit on the road. In my area that includes things like: pocket gophers, gray fox, fisher, porcupine, just to name a few. There are a lot of reasons to doubt the existence of bigfoot but this one doesn't mean much.

As a side note, I was just up in Remer, MN, this past weekend for Bigfoot Days. Remer is 'Home to Bigfoot'. It's really just an excuse to get some tourist traffic into town, playing off of a purported sighting decades ago, but it's fun.

The trail cam aspect is one of the more convincing arguments against them.

I have to agree with your argument. For example, I've never seen a person hit on the road either yet I'm still suspicious that they exist. It doesn't prove anything.

I'm all for excuses to go into the woods and drink and party around the fire. For that reason alone, I'm leaning toward the conclusion that BigFoot is worth more investigation.

I've never seen a person hit on the side of the road either, but know that they happen. I have seen beaver, bear, bobcat *, chipmunk, crow, cow, and a myriad of other things. the one I was never sure about was the opossum; was he dead, or was he playing possum?

*This one made me mad... I came up over a rise one night and there was a mother and two juveniles in the road. Two went left, the other stayed there but as I swerved he ran to the side. I tried to straddle him, but he ran into my tire.

That's when I first went online... good old dial-up. It was also when 911 started to become widely used. When I set my computer up at a motel I would pick up the reciever and listen as it dialed out. Generally it was "9" to get an outside line, then "1-800-..."
One evening I set up and was calling out... forgetting that I had set up to automatically dial the "1". As I listened I heard somebody pick up and say "9-1-1, what is your emergency?"

"Oh, SHOOT!" I quickly told him what I'd done, and he confirmed that I was at the place shown on his caller ID, I apologised profusely and he hung up.

As much as I want to say no. I heard this told the first time nearly 50 years ago . I ask about it later when I was late teens that is still pushing 40 years ago. It was told by someone I trust . She was 11 she saw a gorilla looking in her widow. Her dad and brother tracked the gorilla for more than a mile before falling snow covered the tracks . I know both the lady and her brother the dad survived the Great Depression they hunted anything they could for food , both people tracking whatever this was would have known bear tracks ( which is what I think 99% of BF sightings are ) This happened 15 years before Patterson Gimlin film . I know where the window is ,the bottom of the window is more than 6 foot off the ground.
I have never seen a reliable source for Patterson's deathbed confession. I did watch the history or Discovery or whoever reproduction the Patterson Gimlin film claiming they reproduced the scene their suit and reproduction definitely did not convince me the original film was fake. Matter of fact if anything it convinced me it was more likely real than fake. As I said I think 99% of Bigfoot sightings are black bear and I'm highly doubtful. But the story above and the controversial film leave me enough doubt that I cannot say 100% that it doesn't exist

Based on everything Meldrum has observed and studies he says he does not believe in bigfoot, he is convinced, on the basis of the evidence, that bigfoot exists.

He says any scientist should be amazed to discover that there is an ancient hominoid or hominin species still existing today.
He points out the discovery of bones of a species of tiny humans now called the hobbit. “That made headlines,” he said,

“well gee wouldn’t you think that the discovery of or the recognition of a large bipedal primate in North America in our own back yard would be headline news?”
