People that use "quotation marks" for anything other than quotation

This thread has examples of proper use.

I'm sure you didn't mean to exclude the use of quotation marks when citing a title like "Gone With the Wind" and to emphasize a particular word in a particular context, like "Professor" Irwin Corey.

You can also learn alot from reading, if you choose a good author. OTOH there is one very prolific author who uses so many run on sentences that when I tried to read one of her books I found myself going through it with a red pen, rewriting the sentences. Alot of us don't proof read the way that we should though; I find myself going back to edit my posts because of poor writing.

How much I edit depends on the purpose. I try some on these posts but miss often. Important correspondence or business stuff I usually review at least 3 times often revising sentence structure and word-smithing. Computer grammar and spell check are not always up to the task.

There are a few like that, fell swoop comes to mind.

I'm rather enamoured with the written word of colonial America. Spelling was much more arbitrary, and words were used with careful consideration to convey meaning.

Now, The grammar gestapo jump all up and down over the spelling , syntax and usage, and accept that most people today don't really have a clue about communication, and if they do, they have nothing to convey anyway.

It's a sad turn of affairs.

A lot of people appear to have a lot of time on their hands. Is this correct?

English, Such a stupid language! I'm glad it's getting its deserved abuse! When something is overly complicated, it deserves to be disrespected and abused. Like Government.

I made my living with the English language for 40 or so years...and I tend to take some liberties in an informal setting in order to communicate a bit more clearly and sometimes more emphatically. I still remember, though, the advice of my English professor regarding e e cummings..."Don't you try it."
