I'm going to have to replace the alternator belt soon. It looks like I have to remove the fan to do it. Is there a quicker way?

On my FarmPro 2420 you have to remove the fan and the lower crankshaft pulley to get the belt on. Pretty stupid setup if you ask me ! Definately not a thought out design. I used a GM alternator on mine and a modified mounting bracket from a horse stall door. Hey ! It works great along with a attachment belt from a Steiner tractor. It was the right length. Was just running the Farmpro today. Looks like the battery is going again. Got 2 years out of this one from Walmart. Had 10.4 volts. Looks like a shorted cell. Probably from the vibration I'd guess killing these things. I wonder if the Optima would be a better choice in a diesel. Anyone know ?

I'm very pleased with my Harbor Freight belt. It will last the lifetime of the tractor or me, whichever comes first.
And you can keep all OEM pulleys.

I think there is no quicker way to replace a alternator belt. To maintain your machine well, you should have a routine inspection, then replace it.

Yikes.. lotsa work for a belt.. too bad there isn't enough room to slip the v-belt past the fan shroud one blade at a time.. that's what i do on my old fords... .. just enough room to sueeze the belt thru, then rotate the blade one bit.. then the next. and so on..

After personally using this type of belt for over 300 hours, and using them in an industrial environment for decades, I cannot see a valid reason to NOT switch to this type of belt in this application. Can people really be that set in their ways to not understand the advantages?
Some good reads on this type of belt:

I believe you may be assuming too much.. you assume that because someone does something 1 way, that they do not *understand* any other way.

Perhaps it's a matter of personal choice.

So.. if you were married and saw another woman walk by that perhaps had more money and equal or better looks that your wife.. then.. you'd immediatly trade up due to the benefits right?.. no other criteria to consider then? right?

If I new of a better easier way to do something without grating my knuckles across radiator fins, or pushing a contorted belt against it's wishes - I would adopt it in a heartbeat (since I no longer choose to abuse myself :D) But I understand what you're saying.:)

Um, my gf of 10+ years is hot and makes $200k/yr. Not married, so options are open.

I undestand that it's similar to Ford vs. Chev and Cat vs. Deer. It all boils down to an open mind and understanding.

Wow... your reply placed inside my reply quotes made for a bit of work to get a quoted reply out in this message!

Hmm.. I don't recall my fingers getting closer than 2-3" from my rad last time i changed a belt by sliping it over a fan balde at the shroud.

Uh.. not really... I think it boils down to 'technique'...
