Soundguy,

It is a little more than technique as there just isn't room to slide the belt over the fan blades - belt too small. I have today, purchased a link belt for my tractor and will change out the alternator belt tomorrow all being well. Having just done the 100 hour maintenance, my FEL is off and I have ample room to get the work done - so now is the time. You just can't do it your way on these 45 - 55 hp China diesels.

how small is that belt that you can't slip it over 1 blade at a time till you get it over the fan itself, by itself...

I mean.. we are talking about a belt that drives a fan, and alternator.. and is driven by the crank right?

I know that on my rig there is not enough room between the fan tips and the shroud to get the belt in. The shroud must be removed, and still there is only about an inch between the fan hub and radiator core. My original Chinese OEM belt had about 100 hrs. on it when it failed. I took it to NAPA to get a replacement, and was told the date code was 1955 (it died of old age). Probably Korean war surplus. The tight installation was indeed a very strong argument for the linked belt. They are used world wide in many applications, and with my past experience with them, it was a no-brainer. :)

an inch to the core. that's plenty of room! ;)

i like the v-belts that have the serations in them.. they fit over fan blades that have as little as 1/4" to the shroud clearance.. which.. I havn't seen too many things without 1/4" blade to shroud clearance.

Here is the vee belt I couldn't get on - this is the spare one that came with the tractor. I used a link belt instead and it was a piece of cake to install. The new link belts are a big improvement on the older leather ones. Anyway, as you can see, there just ain't enuff room :eek::eek::eek:

Yep, you are right, it is very small. In fact there are two belts on my tractor and you should be able to see the two on the pulley. The one at the front is the big engine driven (crankshaft plulley) belt which turns the fan and water pump. The second belt (rear one) turns the alternator only. Yes, a bit of a design faux pas you could say. Still, using the link belt solved the problem and made for a good fix.

Methinks it's a way to sell belts and dealer service.. ;)..

actually.. probably was a contact patch area problem with one belt not hitting enough of each pulley.. again though.. that goes back to design.. ;)
