If they are on your insurance they should NOT be getting a 1099. Are you paying unemployment insurance on them, and covering your share of SS? Those two account for 10% of what you pay them.

Okay. Wow. I'm aware of the difference between W2 and contracted employees.

How again am I being evil for hiring people?

Some bad math back a few pages. A couple of different posters referred to $20/hour at $38k or $39k.

Here's the math: 40 hrs x 52 weeks = 2080 hours (A number I teach kids to memorize). 2080 x $20 = $41,600.

For rough figures, just do 2000 x rate...still $40k.

I presumed three weeks off.

Did I say that you were being evil? You've were talking about what people make, yet have been all over the board about what & how you pay your help. I merely pointed that if you are paying 20$/hr and giving them 1099s, they are making much less than if they were employees.

If they are 1099, they are self-employed. Most self employed people never really have time off. You are also not really their employer; it is the same thing as hiring someone to mow your back 40. When they are not working on your land it does not mean they are on vacation.

It it weren't for the ATT breakup, we never would have been able to fully own our phones and Cell phones would have been much more dragged out.
However, when was the last time you saw a cell phone advertising how much better phone calls completed or sounded?

I'm not sure people use cell phones to make phone calls any more ;)

Wow. Talk about getting old - Oh we weren't talking about that. I almost forgot the "Princess Phone" and other phones you had to get from the phone company. years past.

I think most people only have a cell phone anymore. The "home phone" has disappeared because of all the spam/scam calls. If they do decide to make a call (maybe the house is on fire), they will need to do it on a cell phone. But you are right - some people, with all the texting, may not know how to actually call someone on their cell.
