American Flag Mailbox Bashing...ARRGHH

Peter,

How about a flag pole to fly the flag. I love to see the flag blowing in the breeze. I like black mail boxes. Just a little harder for the kids to see at night. Have you seen those springs you can get so the post rolls with the punches? :D It is pretty hard to win against a world of stupid kids.

I want to put up a pole in the center of our driveway turn-around. Still need to get my bosses OK for that one. We had an old sailboat mast for a flag pole as a child...wish I still had it now. We get a lot of wind here, and I would love to see the Flag flying...with dedicated lights for occasional night use also.

When I moved into my area 16 years ago, I was warned that the locals just LOVE demoloshing mailboxes and stealing the mail if of any value, so I got a box at the post office. I never have to shovel snow away from it, my mail is secure and it's all there if I go away on vacation. Yep stealing mail is a federal offense, but I'd have to catch them in the act which is just about impossible since the mail box would be over 400 yards from my house at the end of the road. And yes, the post office will not drive on a dirt road at least in my area. I have replaced my mom's several times over the years... seems to be in cycles. As the local teenage nitwits get older the problem goes away, then apparently they breed and their evil offspring start up again.

There are various strategies that my neighbors uses. Consider the typical situation - the driver slows and a kid leans out the window with a ball bat.
1. If there's a solid post just prior to the box, it will interfere with a right hand swing.
2. One neighbor outlined the maibox with angle iron.
3. If the mailbox is set back a bit from the road with a asphalt paved shoulder, the USPS can pull over and stop, but the kid will pass it by because they don't want to stop. This setup will help with the nearsighted snowplow driver too.
4. A 4x4 set in an old fashioned 5 gal wide mouth milkcan and anchored in concrete will fall over after a hit. but it's easily fixed.
5. The rubbermaid boxes absorb the hits.

We moved out here some years ago. Our mailbox on the road would have been 3/4 mile away from the house anyway, so we got a box. Its great. We stop off to pick up the mail about twice a week. If we go away for a week, no problem.

The only downside is the PO box address. Some places simply cannot seem to deal with it. One establishment would not sell me something, because they would have had to ship it to our street address, which differed from the billing address for the credit card and they refused to ship it via US mail so it could go to the PO box. I just found someone else who actually wanted my business.

1*i like this idea
2*I plan on doing this when I install a new mail box post.
The old post has rotted off after 25 to 35 years.
