I don't understand the concerns with legal issues. Around here a lot of mailboxes and posts have more iron in them than the tractors. At my inlaws in MI, most of them are fully bricked so that the snow plows don't destroy them when they clear the roadways. When I set my mailbox, I went to the post office and got the specifications. Don't remember anything about "can't make it sturdy". Just that it had to be an approved box with a certain setback and between a certain height.

Rural myth here:
Rural resident up the road kept loosing mail boxes to dept of highways wing plows. During the summer he buried a 6" i-beam incased in concrete covered with wood to look like an 8"x8" post. Well winter came and behold late evening, early morning - ca-cling, sound of shutting down of diesel for inspection - never had a problem since!

They are supposed to be break away here, thats the ruled that are given out hieght and such in the specifications. Mine sits on a car rim and will fall over. if run over. If its in town in like a sub division you can have the big grainte or brick stand but you insurance is also higher. If you make an immovable structure they can say it was designed to maim. Thats incase if someone accidentally runs off the road and hits it. I think they change state to state. I dont worry about mine since im on a dead end road and its off the road.

I set up 2 mail boxes just alike.
One of them is a dummy .
That was about 7 years ago.
Neither one has ever been bothered.

I saw the end of that episode, I thought the guy was in the right myself. Since when are you responsible for someone getting hurt while destroying your property?
Nope, he was guilty. Thought it was strange myself.

jdmar, I was wondering is your house new construction with old style millwork or a remodeled older home. Very nice either way. We build new houses that look old and remodel old houses with modern ammenities in keeping with historic neighborhoods. Thanks eddy622611
My own design house. We also carefully picked trim and I had the plinths and rossettes made at a differrent company from the trim that was milled locally. The goal was to look like older world trim with baseboard being more "mop board" height and the detail of plinths and rosettes. The plinths and rossettes actually make the trim work easier...no 45 degree cuts to match (and then deal with shrinkage later). We like the old world look...but modern convenience. Uncommon to do our trim and other details with SIP construction and radiant heat...best of both worlds.
