Price vs. performance and long term utility. That is most of what I like to assess for products I use.

Unfortunately, the "emotional" content can get pretty loud for Amsoil. In the tech world, I see the equivalent interactions mostly when Operating Systems get debated - pretty quickly you end up with a geek jihad.

Sometimes the official ratings game for motor oil gets pretty complicated. There are convenience store junk oils out there with seriously obsolete S* ratings. Do people notice - often not.

The last time I looked at a Quaker State High Mileage bottle, it did not have any official SAE rating. AFAIK, this is because their High Mileage product has too high a Zinc and Phosphorus level for current certification levels.

SAE rated oils that are obsolete/junk for today's motors.

Unrated oils from some major suppliers that are fine, or can even deliver great performance.

Even without straying into the Sex/Politics/Religion/Amsoil minefield, is it any wonder many people are confused (or just tune out) about oil products ?

I make it pretty easy on myself. I let the dealership change the oil while the vehicle is under warranty and change it according to the owner's manual. Out of warranty, I either do it myself and keep the receipts or let the dealer still do it. Engines have gotten to expensive to replace and I do not want that liability. For what it is worth, I have never used amsoil and also have never had an oil related engine failure in any vehicle or piece of farm equipment I own. I am diligent about checking levels and changing oil at required intervals.

Good engines run forever on normal dino and oil changes. I have to laugh when I see a couple of regular posters here, that own the crappiest cheapest chinese equipment... rant and rave that you should spend $ on synthetic oil.:confused2:

Why would I change my oil every 3000, 5000 or 7500 with dino when I can double or triple that amount with a good synthetic oil 'amsoil' for about the same total cost or less? Sounds like I'm saving time and money using synthetic oil.

I'm sure for some low mileage drivers the numbers just wouldn't justify synthetic oil but for me I'll stick with one of the best and spend less

ok beat my price and I will buy it from ya. But, I am NOT running my oil past 7500 miles without an oil sample, so calculate that into the price. Lets see the numbers.

I can do a once a year amsoil oil change for about $55. A 7500 mile change with a local Walmart name brand oil was about $22 per change, maybe you can find cheaper but still need 2 or 3 changes. I refuse to use the $2 quart no name brand oil. I was to nervous to do a 7500 change with dino oil so I did 5000, over $60. 3000 miles was way expensive.

I admit I was nervous about an extended drain the first time but an oil sample (one time) proved my engine wasn't going to blow up and I slowly got over the old 3000-5000 mile change 'rule' and only changing oil once a year is a big selling point for me. My truck cost $23,000, I'm not worried about putting a high quality oil in it for $55 a year.

If at 200,000 miles my engine wears out because of bad oil I'll come on here and say 'I guess I was wrong". But I bet that won't happen.

They sell Amsoil at Rural King and Napa here. Cost about $10 per qt versus $5 for Lucas or Mobil 1

I have done over 14K miles in a powerchoke and 11K miles in toyo/lexus engine. Never an issue using Amsoil.

Now 7,500 miles on a cheap dino oil, hmm, for me I would never do it..I have too many years doing UOA's..

Amsoil has typically 3 levels (price points) of oil product, at least in popular grades.

Ex. their OE 5W30 is $4.70 USD/quart, Preferred Customer price.

I've used a lot of Mobil 1 over the years, and do like it, but comparing apples/apples, the Amsoil here (Canuckland) is definitely not more $$$ than Mobil 1.
