Snow An observation from the deep south.....

The mild winter so far doesn't bother me too much. I'm burning less wood, less diesel, less wear and tear on the equipment, and it is easier to do farm chores. I am worried about a wet spring, though, because it makes it difficult to run my mobile hen houses out on pasture.

Its been a mild winter here up until the last couple of days. with cold and now snow here in Branson, We have about 3 inches and more expected. Then supposed to have freezing rain this afternoon and evening. Some winters we have quite a bit of snow, but not this winter, only 2 skiffs so far and now this little event which would not even interest you guys up north, but all the schools are closed here and further south. But I don't think it is the snow but the predicted ice that worries them. I have decided not to push off the snow today, but to let it set to hopefully catch some of the ice tonight on top and push the whole thing off tomorrow. I am not sure that is a good idea, but it is what I am planning.

Peru in South America is having a hard time with the cold also. Many children dying of pneumonia.

Upstate N.Y. this winter has been so mild latter this week temps back in the 40's go figure. Used the tractor once to clear off drives, I believe the weatherman said total snow fall is 13.6" for this year. I echo what others have said, at least we are saving some on heating costs with fuel oil prices are over $4.00 per gal along wit $4.19 for Diesel. New last night said Gas will be $4.95 by Memorial Day-------------- That's Criminal.

It's been nice, but if we don't get any snow, it's going to be a very dry spring. We will need to get a lot of rain to make up for what we don't get in snow melt. If this were summer, we would be in a drought.

I'm a little concerned about that too - although an extra rainy week would pretty much cover typical snowpack. While it seems crazy warm - I think we are all just scarred from last winter, which was brutally cold and brutally long - I think this year is closer to typical. Before this winter, I can barely remember the last time we had a January thaw - I do remember riding with snowmobiles on my dirtbike wearing just a shirt in January about 10 years ago though. I'm no fan of snowless years like this one, regardless of warm temps. OTOH, I was out skiing yesterday...high temp for the day was nine. Ouch.

I'm in the same boat as MF1652, although there's too much frost in the ground to actually do any grading of the drive.

One of the factors in my deciding to bite the bullet and buy new this year was the national weather service and the Farmer's Almanac both predicting a we and heavy snowfall year in New England. Well, seacoast NH just hasn't seen it since the Oct fall.

The nickle and dime couple of inches each month were okay for improving my removal process and technique; as well as impressing the **** out of the missus so she's a whole lot happier with "my" purchase.

Kebo--You may have the advantage over us right now, but this summer when you are sweltering in that steamy heat, I will be sitting on the deck enjoying the cool breeze off the lake while I have my cocktail.
You forgot to mention swatting the mosquitoes that are big enough to eat horses for snacks.

Snowing like crazy here; right now! I don't think (locally - Kenai Peninsula) we're too far from seasonal averages for snowfall. Cold temps - we're been colder than normal.

I'd guess from the news reports that statewide we've experienced a colder than normal winter thus far. Some areas of the state have also experienced heavy, heavy snowfall as well with Anchorage at record setting levels.

Thankfully, the rivers will have good water levels at Spring breakup and we won't have a bad fire season right away in the Spring, either. Both conditions are a worse situation - IMO - than dealing with a bit more cold and snow than normal.

We had more snowfall in October 2011 than the rest of the season since put together.
