Sorry to be so long between updates...but I have been having a real MESS with the Information Technology system offshore this trip.

Those of you with a few gray feathers may remember the old Samsonite luggage commercials from the 60's starring a gorilla who treats a suitcase sort of like the folks who load our helicopters treated my carry-on bag....

....the one with my netbook in it....

Now just HOW they managed to first drop my bag off of the luggage cart and then drive over it remains to be determined....the heliport is not exactly Heathrow, and the ramp is not terribly busy, the luggage cart is just a little buggy hauled around with a riding lawnmower....

....the tire tracks were not exactly difficult to spot on a black bag.....no CSI need here....

...I'm sure the ground-crew had the best of intentions...and no matter what they intended, my netbook suffered life-threatening injuries.

....I gathered the pieces and limped it back to Texas...

Now, having learned hard lessons back at the dawn of portable computer technology, I back up my data regularly, and could have restored from that, but I did not want to lose the stuff most recently stored....so I considered sending the netbook off to a Data Recovery service....that is until I called a few and got the price, that is...

....I could buy a good used tractor for what folks were going to charge me to TRY to recover my hard drive.

Naw....

This was going to have to be a DIY project.

So...I consulted the oracles, cast a little sand, bought a few parts, waited for a sale at the local Big Box electronics store and lo and behold, managed to copy the data from the damaged machines hard drive onto a nice new netbook....

I scare myself sometimes....

So, with all that done, I uploaded the most recent photos of the ongoing work at The Old Goat Ranch and headed back to work with the best of intentions to continue the Saga....

....and you graybeards know what the road to **** is paved with, right?

...yep... in the intervening month the ship received a new IT Technician and his fiddling about with the system has produced nothing but problems for all concerned....

When the system is up at all, I consider myself lucky to be able to send and receive email....uploading photos is not possible due to the restricted bandwidth, and connecting to my online photo repository is banned by the new "NetNazi" programming....

This unhappy situation will continue for some time to come....so, with apologies to all, I will simply have to post the stories and photos when I get back to civilization....

Of course, this gives me a new mission with regards to working around this censorship BS...and I will be consulting the oracles.....watch this space...

Til then....

Be Careful Out There...

Terry,
I guess those the person that ruined your day is there to protect the helicopter.:( Years ago, while working sheetmetal rebuild at Air Logistics, I heard of a Rough Neck that tossed his tool box into the baggage compartment of a Bell 206 and the box went right through the compartments right side wall, which also happened to be the outside skin.

....on "Crew Change Day" they're hauling soft stuff like carry-on and computer bags....they were just getting in touch with their simian roots...stacked the gear a little too high on the wee trailer...

...is the hull on an S-76C as delicate as the 206??

...so much to do....so little time....

...the Job, the Ranch, a little Fun now and then...a real Time Management problem here...

How about I work up a new post while I'm here on the rig and post it once I get back to the "Hi-Speed" part of the world...?

The S-76's cargo compartment goes across the helicopter, with doors on both sides. The floor is pretty stout. Can't rememeber the door structure, as I haven't worked on them for 26 years. The forward wall of the compartment is metal and the aft center wall is a divider from the batteries and ac and dc junction boxes. Overall, a lot stronger than a 206's baggage compartment.
