an old welder (with armature)

Here is a similar welder. It's a 180 MK. I have not seen one with the large wheels. I wish I had better pics. It looks to me like the owner fabricated the wheel attachments. Anyone know if they came from the factory like that?

As far as I know those Lincoln motor generator welders were all three phase. The large horizontal ones went up to 600 amp output. They were pure DC welding current with controls similar to the engine drives so you could fine tune the volt-amp characteristics
We had a 1000 amp horizontal Lincoln at work that we used for sub arc welding. Also saw some use air arcing with
1/2" carbons. You could move some metal with that! And yes, the machine was kind of obnoxious to listen too. Used it up until about 2005 or so.

I could be mistaken but seems Linc had a single phase model. I worked for a couple Ironwork outfits got them at sales. One guy said he got 6 or 8 for 300 a piece. They were great for factory repairs. They didnt eat much when they sat either.

There may have been a 1Ph out there but I don't remember any dating back to the early 80's when I got started in the biz. The brushes were pretty impressive too like half a hockey puck on the bigger stuff. There were horizontal submarine looking motor gens too. Some so big they were pulled around with the tow motor. Welded like a dream but you heard them in your sleep.

Yup a Linoln DC welder. They made horizontal 400 and 600 amp generators as well. These old welders used a lot of powe but also ran the smoothest beads with lo-hy rods.
