I got my tractor back on Friday (two weeks after I brought it in!). They cleaned up the cooler fins and repainted it, put a new battery in with the vent cap on it. One of the mechanics told me that they tried to put the vent cap on my original battery but it was a fairly loose fit. It fits more snug on the new one but I can easily remove it with figure pressure. He advised me that this may not work but it is what John Deere had told them to do. I mentioned to him that I thought a sealed battery was the best fix and he agreed. He said they could not find a part number for this /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif. I told him I would watch how this "fix" worked and let them know if I have problems. I am glad they did something but honestly I feel they should have found a sealed battery, put that in and been done with it. They had already decided to put a new battery in, why not look harder for a sealed one. Maybe I will be surprised and all will work out fine.
Anyone else have any experience with this vent cap being not a firm fit with out problems?

On my JD 4300 of 1998, am still on the 3rd JD battery. Lot of cold starts through the winter months.

I've had problems with battery's on my 4410. I solved the issue by not stopping and starting my tractor as frequently. Especially on the first start of the day. To me it seems like the alternator is marginal on these models and after you start the tractor you need to let it run for a while to recharge the battery. Since I've been doing this I haven't had any battery problems. If I had a do over I would have ordered the heavy duty alternator when specking out the tractor. If I ever need to replace the alternator.....

I've never had a problem with charging or starting, except when the batteries are at the end of their lives.

That's been the problem. Everything else I own I usually get at least 6-8 years out of a battery. Most times more like 10-12 years. My 4410 in the early years before I caught on was like 2-3 years

I wonder if you have problems with your alternator? I've never had a lead/acid battery last more than maybe 5 or 6 years. I think the heat down here kills them.

Full disclosure, I initially tried to order this battery from Rural King badged with their name. I did not get a confirmation or anything for a few days and I called and they said "Oh, we don't have any in the warehouse, so we were going to cancel your order." Well, I'm sitting here expecting it to show up and wasted about 3 days. I don't think they'd have called me or emailed me at all....They said it only showed inventory in some stores, and they had the best price of about $127 IIRC.
