Hey there 8N, the 8N i had was always in the disgharge on the gauge also. Never had any trouble starting it though.........you are more than likely right about not changing the wires around......good luck with the tractor....Don
Hey Donsyl,

Thanks for the post!

I'll give you guys an update.

Next week I'm pulling the hood off and getting started on building a new wiring harness and install my new 12 volt head lights and a work light on the back.

That should clear up all my electrical issues.

I had to get a new alternator because the one that came with it was dead.

When I installed the new one it showed amps all over the place never sitting still. I took it off and had the part house test it and it tests good.

I'm guessing that will be a ground issue and the new harness install will help.

Something else I've notice.

Soundguy, you may have felt this before but I'm stumped.

When I'm in gear and running free there is a kinda pop or clank sound along with a clunk feeling the comes out through the right foot pad at the front under the brakes levers. It doesn't happen constantly but I guess it at least once a minute.

I hope that explanation is adequate. That's the best I can describe it.

When I was disking I didn't notice it much or at all.

Another thing I'm looking into is the actual color of the tractor when it was made. Currently it's blue and gray but under the blue is red. I haven't dug under the red yet.

I'd like to find a chart showing when Ford change to blue?

Thanks again for everybody's help.

ford 8n's had red cast and a greyish tin. I say greyish as it has a bit of olive or even beige in it. ford changed paint lots now and then thru the years.. so you see anything from an offwhite cream to grey to beige/drab. red is close to a vermillion red.

ford went to a blue / grey paint scheme in 62 with the 4 cyl thousand series.

any time I feel clunks while driving ver rough terain I always look at the front axle king pin and or wheel bearings and hubs.

I can't tell you how many sidemounts I've seen painted up in blue and gray. I just figured that Ford changed the the colors at some point in the run.

My first sidemount was blue down to primer; but it was a terrible paint job.

I kinda think the noise and thunk I'm feeling is coming from the cup that holds the end of the right radius arm. When I get the tractor to the house I'll get it up on the stands and take a look at the front end.

If memory serves, red bellies took 80 or 90 weight oil in the hydrolics. I had a friend use hy tran which was way too thin and it leaked down fairly quickly.

I finally got a break from the rain and mud enough to load up the 8n and get it on the carport to start my clean up, paint, repair, rewire and add a new worklight on the back.

I found...

1. the entire left side front and back lug nuts were cross threaded.

2. one nut on each fender was cross threaded.

3. the seat was not bolted down like I thought. Just rusted. No problem.

4. no rear axle nut retaining clip thingy on the left side.

5. the box leveler is rusted tight.

8. there was a gear on the left brake drum. I guess it'll go in the pile with te other ones.
tomorrow I'll drain the tank and remove the hood and get started on cleaning and priming.

Here's some pictures of the general surface condition.

if you have cross threaded lug studs on the rear.. I'd save priming till I had them fixed.. it's not a simple knock out and replace.. it's a disassemble, knockout, reassemble.. etc..

I need some advice on this one.

After I slapped paint on everything I started looking at the axle pin and saw the thing had been hanging half way out for who know how long. I bought a new bushing but I'm not sure where the washer that was sitting down below the axle pin goes nor do I quite understand how the pin stays in once I replace it.

The washer is embossed on one side to lineup with the end of the bushing but what holds the pin in place?
