The air quality standards for lead emissions were actually tightened up by a factor of ten in 2008, under the Bush admin. I don't know if there is any link between that and the cost of lead acid batteries, but if so, it may be a case of industry being held accountable for the actual costs of pollution, which of course trickles through to the consumer.

Under obama, ALL the lead factories in the US were closed!

We now have to buy all of our lead over seas', mostly from China!

Shop around, parts houses sell the same batt for different prices. Look for a deal...

A large lead smelter closed in the USA in 2013 which was during Obama's 2nd term. But the only significant regulatory change they had endured was the 2008 air quality standards. Obama took office January 2009.

I did state that the lead factorys were stopped, that meaning the mining/smelters were stopped, and we now buy lead from other countries.

Can not comment on which battery fits, but perhaps you'll find this document useful. It has a great list of dimensions, terminal type and locations for the various types of battery standards. https://www.batterysales.com/downloads/battery-replacement-data-book-1994-2013.pdf

Both of my Grand L's (30 and 40) came stock with JIS sized batteries, 75D26R and 80D26R. The closest battery is a BCI Group 24. If you know the stock battery JIS #, you can find the cross on page 17 (link above).

The L3130 current battery is an advance auto gold at 700 CCA and the L4740-3 Cab currently has an advance auto gold at 800 CCA. Both start the tractor without issue in the coldest of weather.

While your battery might be bad, I highly recommend you clean (as in wire brush/sandpaper) battery terminals and ground connections to ensure electrical continuity. Poor wiring continuity will make a great battery look weak!

If you have a Rural King store near, I've found that they are cheaper than anywhere else I've priced batteries. I'm using two of their batteries and no problems.

When you find the battery that suits your needs, you might remove the negative wire where it attaches to the frame and clean it to bare metal, and look for any corrosion build up at both ends of both - and + wires. When only the battery terminal ends are cleaned it's possible you can still have a connectivity problem at the frame.

He didn't say battery manufactures. He said Lead factories. They are ALL closed in the US. The last was here in Missouri, called Doe Run.

There are still recycled lead processors, and battery assembly plants, but no more factories that take the lead ore and turn it into lead. We go to China now. Even though SE Missouri is full of lead.
