We have lost a couple to hawks over the years, but at least here they have a hard time with a full grown hen. Lost many many more to predators getting through the chicken wire. I never saw them, but I suspected weasels since the hole was not much bigger than an inch. They will just work on the chicken wire until they stretch out a spot big enough to slip through....and it'a amazing how small of a hole they can access. Opossums were the biggest killer and also managed to get through and under the wire of my old coop.
Trust me, running around the yard necked at 3am armed with a 10/22 and a flashlight is not fun...been there done that:laughing:
I solved all of that with my last chicken house build by using 1/2" rat wire, then 4 strands of electric fence wire from the ground up to about 3' hooked to a solar electric charger. There are some pic's here:
