The article was interesting...but some of the comments were cruel, disturbing and disgusting

He didn't fall into the chipper...he was on the ground feeding the machine when he got entangled in a rope which got tangled in the feed rollers. He didn't go through the chipper, but was decapitated

Some people are idiots.
And I'm not talking about the guy who was trying to make a living.

Sad. At least it didn't hurt for long. Poor guy.

Wood cutting, chipping and grinding is real dangerous work. I own a tree farm with two high power transmission lines that cross the property, I get well away from those guys when they come to cut easements. Those vertical bush hogs on booms are the worst, they throw cut limbs and chunks hundreds of feet. I stay well away from them.

A good mantra to remember is: "Every machine in your workshop is actively trying to murder you!"

From gjdale of modelshipworld.com. It sticks with me. I consider the the world outdoors my workshop, so, the mantra applies.

Before I start a task, I like to have the whole work area cleared and prepped. I don't want tripping, snagging, range of motion (or style) cramping; perish the thought through action so the work can get going.

My father-in-law might think I'm a wee bit excessive, but he's patient with my adamancy. We do outdoor chores together, and always make sure the woodchipper is turned off *and* unplugged before any troubleshooting. I love to see that machine unplugged.
