My New Holland TC29D in low range will stop even with a heavy load going down hill. And I do have steep hills on my property. If in mid range it will slow the tractor down with a heavy load and if empty it will come pretty close to stopping the tractor. In high range absolutely not.

Interesting point there Steve. When I need to park the thing, I have the bucket on the ground, but it's still a lot of reliance on the brake. I shut it down and leave it in gear, too. If the bucket is empty, I dig the forks into the ground, lifting the front end.

I'm very careful about such things after my Cadet once decided to go off on it's own after I had been off it for a few minutes with the brake set on a hill. It's a hydro, rear wheels only. It slid down the hill and tagged a tree with the hood.
