This is correct, a seperate ground is required by code when a distribution panel is located away from the meter main. It will work without it using a ground rod, but as mentioned for the little added cost I'd do it right. Standard spacing between burried service is 12". Its possible to bury water, gas, phone, cable, and elect in a common trench so long as 12" seperation either verticle or horizontal in maintained. Potable water and sewer must be in seperate trenches though.

Have you thought about just setting another meter at the barn? This way there will be nothing to worry about with the code or house-to-barn wiring.

Some utility companies charge a commercial rate for the second meter hook-up or at the very least a monthly charge. In my area of Michigan the monthly charge is $14 whether you use any electricity or not.

Thanks Muncy, I think you really understood the essance of my question and your suggestion is a good one. I will bond the LV wire in only ONE structure (the house) and test voltage to ground in the other structure (the barn). I suspect your right in that my multi-meter will regester only in milivolts, I hope /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Humm......I believe if I did that I'd still be in the exact same situation. One main at each structure with LV run between the two. I don't see what advantage this would give me except having to pay for two services as apposed to one. Of course in your situation I'd be able to use 200 amps of power at the house and 200 in the barn simutaniously.........WOW, how fast would those meters be spinning? The POCO would probibly make me pay my bill three times a month to prevent losing money on the interest /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
