Re: Another \"How Big\" Tractor request!!!!

I have a B-7800 which is 30 HP and I have around 6.5 acres of land with trees, rocks, drainage ditches, etc. I was tempted to go with the L3130 but after looking at it again, it was too large when the house was in and the kids play stuff in the yard. I opted with the 7800 because it has plenty of power and is still small enough to mow close to the house, rocks, etc. I got the 7800 with FEL, 60" mid mount mower, 60" box blade, loaded R-4 tires, rear chains (every two link crossbars) for about $17,500 plus taxes. It is a nice machine at a decent price. Although I have heard many people talk about the New Hollands if you are a taller person because their seat adjustment is angled and raises as it goes back.
Good luck

Re: Another \"How Big\" Tractor request!!!!

You mention Mahindra 2810 hst, but did your dealer have the new 15 series Mahindras: 2015, 2615, 3015? All of which are smaller in size than the 2810 hst. These all are mitsubishi powered, specs are up on our site if you need, or if your ever in Connecticut stop and take a look. They are similar in sizes to the kubota b7500 and b7800. I think the bx line is definatley too small for your needs. Good luck with which ever you choose.

Re: Another \"How Big\" Tractor request!!!!

John, welcome to the forum and congratulations on the new place. I wouldn't disagree with any of the advice you have gotten so far. With your relatively flat property and what looks to be good soil you could do the job with the BX series or the Grand L series and everything in between. What I see on the forum often is how many unanticipated projects your new rural adventure is going to offer in the upcoming years. Barns, gardens, fencing, tree planting are just a few of the things many of us end up doing. Also 5 acres of mowing on a regular basis seems to be fun at first and too much after a few years. For these reasons I personally would be looking for the most PTO horsepower in the frame size I was comfortable with. This will generally determine how large of mower, tiller, snowblower, power rake you can use.

Your height will also be important as you consider brands and size of tractor. You will be spending more hours on the tractor than you realize now so get one you are comfortable with.

In the Kubota line I would be looking at the 30 hp B series tractors or the 3130 for your long legs. You are also wise checking out as many brands and dealers as possible.

It is an old saying on the forum and here it is again. There are exceptions but we see a lot of members trading in for a larger tractor and very few for a smaller one. Money is an issue with most of us and when building a new house the numbers can be staggering. Keep in mind that a few thousand spread over the life of a tractor is not much per year.

Best of luck and let us know the out come.

Mark,

Thanks for the comments and reassurance that I am on the right track. For the slight money differential I definitely dont want to get stuck in too small of a tractor and regret it later.

John,
I drove past Canfield NH last night and saw they had a TC29 and TC30 side by side on their lot. If I were you, I would consider checking into a TC30. It's priced only a few hundred dollars more than a TC24 and is much cheaper than a TC29. The gauges may be more basic looking and the tractor doesn't LOOK as fancy as the TC29, but it's a real value in my opinion. If I had much more than my 3.6 acres, it was something I would have considered. There are several people at TBN who swear by their TC30. MrWurm is one who comes to mind.

I didn't see any Class I Boomers (TC18, TC21, TC24) sitting on their lot, but I don't usually see that size sitting at the dealers when I drive past for some reason. The offer still stands if you want to check out my TC18 sometime. Even though they don't make it anymore, it's still the same size as the TC21 and TC24, it just was a smaller engine.

Andy,
Thanks for the heads up about Canfield. I want to get over there soon to check out their lot. I would like to still check your tractor out and see the difference between the Class I & II. Might as well keep my options open. Pm or email me sometimes with an indication of the best time when to stop.

Re: Another \"How Big\" Tractor request!!!!

I'll add my opinion. I have a JD 4115 HST w/FEL, 60"MMM, 54" front hydraulic blade and 48" tiller. It has a few more PTO HP than the 4100 or the 4110. My manicured lawn area is about 5+ acres and the pasture is 6+ acres and expanding. I use the 60"MMM for both with no problems. I currently mow the pasture once or twice a year to keep down the unwanted brush growth. The front hydraulic blade has performed perfectly this winter on my 140' of driveway with over 60" of snow last winter with storms from 15 to 26 inches the only problem is I wish it a 72" blade.
In your case I'm not sure your whole 5 acres will become your manicured lawn area but using the CUT around the house, going over the septic tank, you will want a 4100 - 4115 (new or used with turf or R4s and they are lighter). DOn't forget you will probably want a tilller for growing veggies. Anyway, I'm not professing Green but any other CUT of similar fram size and HP of the 4115 I think woud be the best. Good Luck with you new home and make sure when you build your garage have enough space for your tractor!

Re: Another \"How Big\" Tractor request!!!!

The Grand L tractors are almost twice the weight of the 7800 or 2910 but the over all size are just inches other than height of the Grand L . I have a 3430 with 72 " MMM and 723 FEL and the mower does a beautiful job on the fields( six acres) which I mow every week in the summer and also around my house. These tractors are smooth and quiet.
