Ummm ... I have to say this ... I'd hate to live in the world you do where paranoia and fear rule even the smallest of insignificant events ...

From this I see ... someone was visiting your cousin, realised (due to the lack of car in the drive) that they weren't there and reversed, for some other reason, they stopped (maybe to make a call, who knows ?) and this event was enough to be concerned ?

Maybe we should add a little plumbers flux in the intruders beverages for a true touch of intestinal torture!

:)

Double Wow! :laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing:

I can't stop laughing  I...can't....stop...

Wow!

No Fire ant hills and sugar water?

Just make a note of the date and time of his visit. When Cousin returns, tell them what happened and what he said about them leaving. Ask if anything is missing.

Next time, take a spotlight out there. Hold it at arms length and blind them until they fall out of the seat. You hold the light out far from you because some visitors will try to shoot it out. Say what you want, but get the license plate for the report and inspect the passenger compartment and truck bed for contraband as they leave. If they think you are rude and say it, counter with a "better safe than sorry" line. Don't show a gun, but carry yourself like you might be carrying.

I don't want neighbors who "just drop in" and get angry about it. That's why I have my alarms. I never take a dog because the dog gives away my advantage and I don't want them hurt.

My approach has always been with a vehicle, and one I can afford to wreck should they decide to make a run for it. Full throttle into a front wheel pretty much stops their escape and looks like they were trying to hit you.

Been there. They never seem to wear a seat belt. Stick around in case you need to help them put an eye back in (Sammy Davis Jr. look alike contest winner). Carry some long tie wraps and use them to bind their feet if you catch a stranger. Put a tiewrap around each ankle individually then another one through the other two. Same for wrists. Then one across the wists and ankles. Put aluminum furnace tape around their yap if they get mouthy. This is another situation where a front loader is helpful. Hang them upside down until they turn purple. Then call a Deputy after youv'e had a smoke or two to analyze the situation and see if there are any others (don't trust their word for it). Actually, all they could do is shake their head. That furnace tape is tough stuff....

Richard, we are northwest of you up near Cookville. According to the Sherrif, we have been having problems with one or two guys going in to scope out a place, then calling in their buddies to B&E the house if the coast was clear. If they got stopped or somebody saw them, the scout would make an excuse and beat feet out of the area. Maybe thats what you saw, or maybe it was really just a "neighborly visit."
As far as guns and protection, if I am going out to check on something that could be wrong, especially at night, I bring a pistol and a good flashlight. Period. Rather have it and not need it than walk into something without it and wish it were there. Not that I need it on my land, but I also have a CCW permit. Stay safe!

And hopefully the people in question would of been on YOUR property.

Why would that matter? If I'm going to go investigate suspicious activity on my friends land I should leave my protection at the property line?

You didnt do a thing wrong, F that guy, seems wierd as **** to me. I keep a tac light with a glock 40 cal mounted to it for situations like that.

Seems to me if they had plans of wrong doing, they wouldn't have their head lights on.

Go talk to them.

Their 'your' neighbors.

I hope you don't mean you are using that to light the situation. Pointing a firearm at someone just to put light on them is very risky...not only illegal most places but if a stranger (not law enforcement) on my or my family's land, that I don't know, pointed a gun at me he would very likely be shot!
Huge difference in carrying/showing and pointing.

I have remote property up a long private drive. When I'm there everyone gets challenged coming up that drive if its not the lone elderly neighbor couple.
When I'm not there all are photographed on a hidden camera;)

I agree the challenged neighbor's response was weird and would concern me too. A proper response would have been to thank the OP for being pro-active and keeping an eye on things.

I was working in my garage one day and saw a pickup slowly cruise by, came by again really eyeballing my property, third time he did it, I jumped in the car and flagged him down on the next block while he was talking to a female jogger- she was standing back from his car a ways indicating to me she didn't know him.
Turns out he was looking for a lost dog and thanked me for my concern. He lived in the neighborhood and I had met him years before.
Didn't meet him under the best of circumstances the first time either..his dog bit my 10 year old son while he was riding his bike.
That bite was 16 years ago so it wasn't the same dog..guess he still didn't have a clue to keep his dog in:confused2:

I apologize, I didn't realize you were an LEO.

Then, throw someone else who is not on their own property at night while armed if the police do show up, then things can get real interesting.

I try to use my brain over my guns.

Amazing isn't it? Kind of like guys who go hunting and don't carry any other glass with them other than what's on their gun, and they use it to "scope" things out in the distance.

To the OP, I'm guessing this is your "interesting neighbor" that you've had run ins with at least one other time? If this is the same man you had mentioned about in a previous thread, I'm guessing he's just too much of a butt hole, and no matter what you do, it seems this guy is hankering for conflict.

My challenge would have been a little bit ruder. The light would have been full on in his face and if he could still see he would have been looking at the business end of a 1911 or an AR-15.

Is it legal to point a gun in someones face if he isn't presenting a threat ? Isn't that considered brandishing? Could you go to jail for that? Just asking.

One should be life threatened before pointing a gun at the person threating your life.

I am sure that is what some of these posters are moving to.

Let us hope they are pointing because all other efforts have failed.

This depends on the state. While someone needs to correct me, I understand that in south carolina if you act in what appears to be a threatning manner you have the right to defend yourself. Now I am not sure what that limits you to. But if 2 guys vs. me, and they are alot bigger than me... Well stuff may appear.... Especially in some remote areas or at my house. I had a knot head drive up to my house a few years ago. His buddy got out of the truck.. Asking all kind of questions in a near shouting voice, my right hand never left the small of my back.

They were on posted private property, I kept calm and even smiled. I think they got the picture when they driver read my tshirt. It was an old USMC combat town shirt.

I asked them to leave and not trespass again as I had pictures, they looked dumbfounded just as my cell phone went off.

When I answered, I just said yes deputy they are here come on up and arrest them if they are still here.

No I do not see any weapons, yes I am.

It took them 5 minutes to scram.

And I followed them off property...
My wife spent the next 10 asking me what that was all about!!!!!!!

I'd probably be carrying if I were investigating suspicious activity on my property at night but a recent local story introduces a note of caution. A 70 year old business owner and church pastor, living on the same property as his business awoke one night to the sound of a car pulling into his parking lot. As he had been burgled several times, he grabbed his pistol and his flashlight before going out to investigate the intruder. Turned out the intruder was a sheriffs deputy. The business owner was shot and killed. Be careful out there!

Based on the story I read detailing the official statement released by the police concerning this incident, I'd have to say there's a lot of unanswered questions concerning the officers handling of the situation and use of lethal force. Perhaps we will never know as there's only one story being told, as the other one has been silenced.

I've got an uncle and a nephew who are both deputy sheriffs as well as several life-long friends who are city police officers, and I have nothing but respect for law enforcement, but something sure don't sound right with this story. Paranoia resides on both sides of the fence. As far as I understand, isn't a business/residence considered private property?

Getting back to Richard's original thread, if one of my family members asked me to keep an eye on things and it's late at night and dark, with no lights on in the relatives house and no car in the drive and somebody pulls in their drive and shuts the engine off, I'd have to say that's mighty suspicious activity. And if I'm going to check it out I'm not going empty-handed. But let me say I'm not gonna belly-crawl in full camo with a survival knife twixt' my teeth and an AR-15 (with a full clip!) in my hands either. :D

I have a CCP and I would definitely be employing CC tactics in a situation like this. With gun ownership/concealed carry, comes intelligent, responsible behavior and training.

In more cases than not, if somebody commits an illegal gun crime, whether it be robbery or murder, it's front-page, national news. If someone legally defends themselves from robbery/violence with a gun, it tends to be a one or two paragraph write-up buried at the bottom of the third or fourth page.

I'm not at all paranoid, but I'm not very trusting either. I've seen too many acts of violence committed against defenseless people to go through life all blind and happy-smiley. Lots of good, honest, hard-workin' folks in the world, but there's also a lot of low-life pond scum floatin' around too. I'm more than willing to reach out to the first or turn-aside the second. ;)

I'm still baffled on this one. (

Richard,

Maybe it wasn't a big deal? Maybe he was just stopping bye? Maybe he recognized you and got agitated at being blinded. He did stop his car afterall, and you said his first words were 'didn't you recognize me'. I'm sure it would only take about 3 seconds of a neighbor continuing to shine me or you in the eyes before we'd be agitated too.

I'm sure your neighbor would have been better off to just say "see you later", but he didn't and he's still your neighbor. The best thing for you to do is stop by HIS house and say hi. Even apologizing for shining him would be in your best interest. Do that and I'm sure you'll be much better off in case you ever have an ACTUAL problem and need help.

In my part of the country, you will be pointed at and shot. Its simple, if you have no business ... we will finish the business. It should be that way. DFWM&IWFWY

QFT.

Alot of paranoia here. Talk of deadly force for a NEIGHBOR visiting another neighbor?

Now if i heard a window smash, or a scream, or something, well thats a bit different. Sounds like the neighbor went by, got out, probably walked up to the door and knocked. Got no response and left in a reasonable period of time. Whats the big deal?

Wow! That's really sad. Are you saying this with emphasis on the OP's story, or is this just a regular practice in your part of the country?

I guess I was not clear ... and thanks for pointing that out. I was talking that if someone pointed a gun or if we believed it to be a gun well ... and No its not a practice.
