The operator's manual on my B2610 says to stop completely, depress the clutch and THEN shift from 2WD to 4WD.

The guy that delivered my tractor sayed if your wheels start spinning just shift it into 4WD without even letting off the gas.

Is this safe? Jeff

Jeff... if it were me, I'd follow the manuals instructions. The way I do it is if I think I might need the 4WD I shift it in before I have to have it. That way you know you have the extra traction before it is a problem.

Don't feel bad, the dealer I rented a B2710 and the dealer I purchased my B7610 told me a similar story.....to shift into 4WD while still creeping along a bit, it helps to slip into gear easier. I have found this to be true. Sometimes When I come to a complete stop it's hard to get in without moving forward or back a bit. Never had anything but a smooth shift while MOVING SLOWLY. Who knows, safe is to follow the manual, but that isn't always that much fun /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

My experience is that common sense goes a long way in these kind of situations...and by saying that I don't mean to imply that you don't have a lot of it! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Actually, I am not sure what I normally do with respect to shifting between four and two wheel drive. I usually keep my B2910 in 4X4 mode, unless on hard pavement.

But I have found that when changing speed ranges, it is easier to shift between speed ranges when drifting to a stop, with the HST pedal centered. Without using the clutch. There is not grinding or anything like that, just a smooth transition between ranges, much easier than trying to change ranges with the tractor stopped and the clutch depressed.

Common sense tells me that IF the tractor shifts between 2 and 4 wheel mode, when drifting to a stop, without making a sound and doing so smoothly, it should not be a problem.

I have never, and don't plan to, tried to shift into 4X4 mode when on the run.

Best advice I know though, is to follow the manual when in doubt. It was after all written by those who built the tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Putting a tractor in and out of 4 WD while moving when the machine is not spinning or under load is one thing. ( I do that all the time).

But jamming it into 4 WD while under load and the rear tires are spinning is asking for trouble !!
