All rain here in southern RI. Good thing too, I'm sick of the white stuff. Looking forward to spring if there is still such a thing.

OK technically not in New England, but here in Orange county NY theres a good 12"+ on the ground and its not letting up. I'm thinking 18" by the time its over. The company I work for let all 3500 people leave at noon. I plowed my driveway, and my neighbors this afternoon, and expect to be doing it again in the morning. Bring on spring!!!
Sullivan County NY here just up from you. Had 16 inches Tuesday and Tuesday night. So far today we have had another 11 inches. Been plowing snow for 35 some odd years and have not seen this type of plowing very many times. Expecting probably another 8 inches at least. YUP the fun factor is looong gone. On my third tank of diesel fuel for the 2320.

Had about 7" inches of very heavy wet snow here by 10am, then another 1" of sleet. Since noon just light sleet or rain.

Good name Thomas gives it - cement snow. I don't remember ever clearing anything any heavier. Don't have a blower, but was wondering if it was blowable even. Have my doubts.

Driveway is all thawed out, so to peel it off, I was taking 1/2" of topping that was stuck to the snow. Seems like either the bucket was riding 3" high or digging into the topping. Made me think of the guys in MD and VA that had similar snow - except X 3 -, can't imagine getting anywhere without chains.

We'll see what tonight brings. 20 miles south of here it was almost all rain.
Dave.

Well, Now I know what happens when wet snow packs like concrete in the auger and blower chute. Sheared off two low grade bolts. Put in a grade 5. Have not run the blower since. It has been more like plowing water than blowing snow. I did have a very high grade bolt in there , socket head cap screw , for years . Then I read all the notes here about shear pins here , looked at the parts list and put the correct bolt in. Now I know why I put the SHCS in there 10 years ago. Lets see what the grade 5 does.

AHHH shucks!!! the storm fizzled out here where I am. :( No seat time. I cleared the 1" wet slushy stuff this morning so Wife could go to work in shoes instead of boots.

Cant wait, The only differance between this storm on the ones that hit M.D. and D.C. Are Schools will only be closed for one day, ( maybe not at all) no shortages at stores, No nation wide press coverage for a week. why, its only a little snow. :)

Yea, but everyone in MD seems to have an SUV and 4WD and thinks they can drive in the white stuff. Very few of them forget the brakes on that SUV are worse than any car... The drivers around here are about as bad as I have seen in my life, and I have lived in upstate NY and New England for 22 years. Heck, two drops or rain here shuts the beltways down.

Dave thanks for understanding. Down here we get snow, but it's rarely the light or dry or fluffy snow experienced out west and up north. It's heavy wet snow, that weighs 50 lbs. per shovel full. Many times it's not even blowable. We get the moisture off of the Atlantic. I was bucket loading the 22" of snow in December, and the 32" of snow in the first February storm, and the 18" of snow in the next Feb. storm 4 days later. It was like loading dirt, just to give people a comparison. The loads were dumping out of bucket, and remaining as the shape of my bucket....thank goodness for carnuba waxing the inside of my bucket.

As far as being ill equipped down here, that is another urban legend perpetuated by some folks and the media. We have vast fleets of road equipment. Our problem is an incredible population density and large amounts of pavement to be cleared. My county, near Wash DC, has more pavement needing plowed than the entire state of Vermont. (Not picking on Vermont, just comparing). The population of Vermont is smaller than my county, in fact.

Our problem is more logistical, not lack of equipment or experience.
In the east coast cities, heavy snows have to be loaded up and trucked out, it's a logistical nightmare, there is no where to put it when there is 3 feet of it, and it weighs like wet concrete.

Doing anything in a very densely populated area takes more time, more coordination, more money and more labor.

I'm just glad we're not getting it. The wind is bad enough, we are getting drifting from our old snow.
