Backhoe Another reason for a backhoe

EddieW - Maybe I'm just too analytical, but I find myself sitting here wondering whether it's easier or more difficult to be passionate when you're "elbow deep in sewage". I'm not getting anywhere... /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Hey, I was getting hopeful for you when you said she would take you by the hand and walk you out to the shed....

Let me "cogitate" on that a while before I "pondtificate" on the matter.

She knew the backhoe wouldn't want to come in the house at the end of the day.

There. It's all clear to me now. I knew that if I asked for help somebody would explain it to me. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Be carful selecting your chipper.

I bought one of the Home Depot 10 HP chippers a few years ago. It is the MTD unit. Using it I discovered major problems. These units are direct driver from the engine to the flywheel and blades. The starter rope must turn not only the engine but also the chipping/chopping assembly. It takes very little material in the chopping chamber to bog down and prevent the unit from starting.

This means that any material left in the chopping chamber must be cleared out before restarting the unit after it stalls. As a minimum this requires removing the screen and reaching in and pulling material out. Sometimes there was enough material rubbing on the side of the chamber which must be fished out with a thin stick.

When running the MTD chipper/chopper was fine for small branches (less than one inch) but was extremely slow on branches larger than 2 inches diameter.
In chopper mode it was very easy to put too much materal in and stall the engine.

Its sitting in my storage room, taking up space. I can't sell it. I would have to imply that it is somehow useful, yet it looks to good to throw out (or even move to outdoor storage under my deck). Someday I will find someone building a go cart who wants the engine.

I now have a Bearcat chipper/chopper for my tractor. (In other threads I have talked about the Bearcat, the Blower and Vacuum attachment)

Yeah Harv, Just 'cause they are penurious it does not follow that they are impecunious.

Ponder this! My wife agreed to a backhoe when we bought our Kubota L4610HSTC (hydrostat tranny with cab heat and air 4wd, TNT etc etc) She held out for the cab over my objections but I love it except... You have to understand that she had no idea that the L4610 could have a cab or a backhoe but not both. I'm still hopeful that I will find an aftermarket backhoe that will work on this unit.

Patrick, I saw a Woods 9000 rigged up on a 4610 HSTC at my local dealer. I even tipped the seat back and climded on to be sure it all worked and it did.

Hayden, Thanks a lot man! Just in time for Christmas too! Now how to strategize this for my wife????? Too bad I dug a hole to bury a dead cow for a friend with to much ease with the FEL so that reason is out unless I make a big deal about how lucky I was to have the ground soft and wet and how only a backhoe would have done it otherwise. Maybe I'll have to collect roadkill that will need burying where the ground is hard or...

Suggestions welcomed...

Thanks again Hayden,

Patrick, soon to have a woods backhoe maybe!

Hello up there in the frozen north of Cedar Ranch! Did you ever give in and buy your wife the 10 hp chipper shredder? If yes, how about a user report?
