Sounds like we need some more states to get bottle deposit laws passed. In Michigan it's fairly rare to see beer or soft drink containers alongside the roads. I think that kids probably throw out just as many, but ten cents a can is apparently enough to get somebody else to pick them up and cash them in.

Tom

That's something I'd really like to see happen.

What really gets me is why do smokers think it is okay to throw out cigarette butts. Usually they are still burning.

Well, this tweaks me too. I have never smoked. I volunteer at the local fire station. I guess I am sensitive to it because here, right now, it is tinder dry. California gets dry in the summer. And there goes someone throwing a cigarette out the window, with all that dry grass. On top of just plain littering!

If they want to smoke, they can smoke to thier hearts content. Don't risk setting half the state on fire though...

Well I'll toss in something that has worked well in Texas....

The "Don't Mess With Texas" ad campaign. It's been around for 20 years now, remember the Randy White and Ed "To Tall" Jones ads. It just got the best slogan award here in the last week or so. Going up againsted, "Just Do it", Time to make the donuts, etc. Rare that's it's in the list because it's a PSA, not selling anything. The states DOT studies said that litter went down after the ads came out.

I still like the Randy White one and Mike Scott one the best.

So you never smoked, and I smoked for 47 years (just quit about 3 months ago) and my wife still smokes, but we never threw our cigarette butts out; never could understand why people do that. Instead of the factory ash trays, we used ash trays in the cup holders of our vehicles; they held a lot more. Even down in the country, I carried a tin can on the tractor for an ash tray (you sure don't want to set a hay field on fire). And both down in the country, and now back in town, it annoys me to have to pick up other peoples' cigarette butts from my yard.

I think I'd have to disagree. The idea sounded good, but from the amount of trash I see along our roads, I don't think it worked well at all.:(

Hi Ya Bird,

I don't have a problem with folks that smoke. Almost everyone in my family either does or has at some point. My Dad has since early teens. He has always done as you mention. The cigarette was always put dead out, and in the right container.

I think what gets me is when you see on the local news that a fire has consumed 250,000 acres, yet still there's the person that throws a butt out.
