Any fabric covered barns in trouble?? Mine has done alright so far. Truss type 138ft x 83ft by 55ft high

The snow in my Arkansas coffee can test has melted and the depth has been measured - 8" of water, which works out to a snow load of 41.6 psf. This is higher than my estimate based on my 12" snow cube, I am sure because my cube was higher up in the pack and did not account for the more densely packed snow at the bottom. Back at it again today, before there's ever a chance of that getting rain-soaked.

You have my respect...That is hard work that needs to be done. It becomes a priority. It is all about keeping things safe.

Your pictures look familiar to me. That is what my garage looked like when I decided to get up there and clear it. Fact is, the bottom half had turned to ice. I couldn't even chip at it...it was simply to late. A week a 2 later...Down she came.!! It felt like I had just gone through a fire.

But, I learned a big lesson. Get after it every storm.

Ive seen three of the "tarp' type of garages here gone down. Mostly summer people so they can go in and shake and punch the fabric to shed the snow..
Kind of sad as it take but a couple minutes each storm ,but if you live severla hundred miles away not much you can do.

This partial roof failure was in a self storage facility, the renter took out the dividing wall between 2 units to give wide open space. These places are built pretty lightly to begin with but by removing the corragated steel partition wall it was just a matter of how much snow would start it caving in.

We just stabilzed it yesterday with triple 2x6 posts.

Although this winter snow is a little scarce, we normally get 2-3 feet of snow on our roofs up here in Michigan. Up behind the peak, you also get 3-4 foot drifts when the wind blows. I doesn't take much snow/wind to build up these drifts...so keep an eye out for them, too.

Ive seen two of the smaller green ones down because they are summer people and didnt get to knock them off.

This is only the second time in 30 years that I've felt I had to clear the house roof. Sorry to hear that you learned the hard way. Thanks for the encouragement.

We had a major collapse at our fair grounds this week. The building was the largest building on the grounds and was used for boat and RV storage in the winter. There were 42 units inside at the time of collapse (one of them being my son's camper) and extent of damage is unknown at this time. This is the worst winter for unrelenting snow and ice in many years!
