Another Smoky Summer in the Northwest

This morning is the same as yesterday. 59F and heading down. Air is full of crap. It doesn't smell smoky but it's certainly not clear. Fans are pulling a tornado thru the house right now. Been on since 9pm last night.

@oosik Purple Air is reporting a particulate count of over 200 at the moment out your way. It may not smell smoky, but that's in the "health alert" category.

It went from readings of near zero yesterday to 100 this morning. It doesn't smell smoky, but you can't see very far either. Recirculating the house air at the moment to run it over the electrostatic filters.

I changed out the particulate filter (HEPA) on the vacuum on Wednesday and it was black with soot. Normally it is just gray.

Stay safe out there!

All the best, Peter

The last three day have been great. Feels like fall already. Cool nights, clear air and warm days. Right now at 2:30 it's 73F. Time to start taking more road trips.

Cooler weather but heavy smoke here today. This is the front yard right now.

I just checked and there are some 26 wildfires, in all states of containment, in WA state. Fortunately - no smoke, ash or crud, here, again today.

However - all these fires DO limit where we might go for an outing. Brownie still finds pleasure chasing the grasshoppers and I enjoy the cooler temps. So .... I guess, it's just best that we hang around the homestead.

News tonight is that 20,000 structures are threatened around Tahoe, and mass evacuations are in effect. I wish them luck. Fire season could run for another month and a half.

I saw an article about the fire around Lk Tahoe. CA is REALLY having a bad time. So ... tonight I opened both windows and only turned on one fan. Sat night with both fans on the house got down to 63F. Running around the house with one of my winter coats on most all day Sunday.

Learned to really appreciate this cool, smoke free weather. Now if we could get some rain.

My entire 80 acres looks like a fuzzy Sahara desert. Only green on the property is the pine trees.

I mowed more dead, dry field grass out beyond the house. It convinced me that I will NEVER get a bush hog for the tractor. The dust, debris & crud raised with my riding mower was a real nightmare. Without a cab on my M6040, any type of bush hog would be completely intolerable. Maybe with a full HAZMAT suit and rebreather.

Briefing this morning, they were talking into November for California and the west coast.

Last year they had one of our crews in Florida in December, but I think that was a controlled burn.

Yep... Tahoe evac complete for Eldorado portion.

Had not been to cabin in years and spent a night two weeks ago... cleaned pine needles and raked perimeter

On the way home visited Echo Lake and said I had forgotten just how nice it is...

Many of the cabins are no more and Fire Crews left in the face of approaching flames.

Only twice have flames breached the Sierra and both times occured in the last few days.

Year round neighbors pulled out and cell tower down so less ability to make contact and Fiber Line damaged.

California essential South Lake Tahoe city services now operating across state lines in Nevada...

Nevada Law Enforcement and Fire working side by side on California side

One comment... I thought they might have used Gulf States evac model where the other side of highway also used for evac...

With vehicles bumper to bumper as far as the eye could see and nothing on the other side of highway 50 it would seem logical to pick up one more lane.

@ultrarunner The emergency services apparently had the one way evacuation model ready to go, but were trying to keep a lane open for fire crews to get in. The trouble with Tahoe is that there is only one road around the lake, and relatively few exits.

Many of the cabins are on Forest Service land and won't be rebuildable as they were grandfathered in. I hope that your cabin makes it.

Fire season will likely go into November...

All the best,

Peter
