I saw an article about the fire around Lk Tahoe. CA is REALLY having a bad time. So ... tonight I opened both windows and only turned on one fan. Sat night with both fans on the house got down to 63F. Running around the house with one of my winter coats on most all day Sunday.

Learned to really appreciate this cool, smoke free weather. Now if we could get some rain.

My entire 80 acres looks like a fuzzy Sahara desert. Only green on the property is the pine trees.

I mowed more dead, dry field grass out beyond the house. It convinced me that I will NEVER get a bush hog for the tractor. The dust, debris & crud raised with my riding mower was a real nightmare. Without a cab on my M6040, any type of bush hog would be completely intolerable. Maybe with a full HAZMAT suit and rebreather.
Dust is not a consideration here. We are not allowed to mow dry grass, run chainsaws, do metal grinding or welding, or any other thing that might strike a spark. If you didn't get it mowed by June, forget it. Fire danger has been high to extreme for two months.

@ultrarunner The emergency services apparently had the one way evacuation model ready to go, but were trying to keep a lane open for fire crews to get in. The trouble with Tahoe is that there is only one road around the lake, and relatively few exits.

Many of the cabins are on Forest Service land and won't be rebuildable as they were grandfathered in. I hope that your cabin makes it.

Fire season will likely go into November...

All the best,

Peter
I'm not familiar with California rain patterns, but here in Oregon the winter storms don't start rolling in until sometime in November. We normally get some rain in October, though one year out of four it's too dry for the witches to hold their Samhain bonfire.
