Anti-Scalp Wheel Solution

Thanks Larry for the good idea. Did my wheels today and things worked great! Can replace the bushings now with stock sizes and while I was ordering from McMasterCarr I replaced the dumb split rings and pins with snap pins, much easier to adjust wheel height.

Its like everything else, once I had all the tools out and with all the interrupts, put wood in the stove, answer the phone, clean and oil the lathe, put everything back, less than two hours of real work, start to finish over three!! But I think there will be a payoff later as this fix should last a long time!!

that's good time for the first one and I agree that the guys are getting a good fix for a low price. I do think with a little maintence these wheels even being plastic will last a long time. I am going to an Aluminum foundry this week to see about getting wheels made like the OEM wheels but with solid sides so I can bore each side and press in sealed bearings, but this could be a pricey wheel for what it does. To make alumnium billet wheels the cost is 25.00 per wheel just in material. that's all for now

Sounds good, but I can buy replacement wheels from Stens for 3.95 my cost so i'll just replace wheels every couple of years.

Was the shaft-lock pins the actual 7.81 millimeter diameter? I am interested in using the same type pins on my deck.

What was the dimensions of the pins You used on Your deck?

I used 5/16 x 2 which are a tighter fit in the holes.

Thanks Dan.I am going to pick some up locally if I can.(TSC has the 5/16 x 3)

WE often change the wheels over to the bronze bushings on the Kubota's by just going to the Cub Cadet line.

Art,

I am not clear on what you mean. Do you just switch to the Cub wheels? If so, what is the cost of 4 wheels and do you need to do any modifications, do you have part numbers?

My reworked wheels arrived this afternoon and they look great. Larry has made an additional upgrade to the modification by putting in a additional piece of bearing stock in the middle so there is bearing material along the entire length of the axle. His note to me indicated that this improvement is to better disperse the grease along the axle and to eliminate the hydraulic action of putting grease into the fitting and having the grease pushing against the bearing material and dislodging the end bearings from the wheels. I must admit that I am impressed with the quality of the work and his attention to details such as this. I know that the work that Larry has performed is going to outlast the life of the rest of the plastic part of the wheel.
Now if he can devise a device that will keep me from finding the rocks in the lawn, that would be great!!!!!!

Anti-Scalp wheel update 3/6/04 Solid aluminum cast wheel weighs 3 lbs.finished with bronze bushings installed. The diameter is 4 7/8" due to shrinkage in the casting process, shouldn't hurt the preformance of the wheel doing it's job. If any one would like a set of these wheels please contact me at larry@moweraxle.com or moweraxle@yahoo.com and we will talk. I have taken 5 pictures from raw casting to finished wheel and will upload them.
