Antifreeze/Engine Coolant

Yea I know on the powerstoke Mike. Evidently the new one was to comply with upcoming EPA standards and mileage. The new one is supposed to get better mileage, more hp, more torque, and be quieter. Who knows. On the plus side Ford will finally have a 5 speed auto transmission that is supposed to handle up to 750 lbs. of torque. That would be nice to have a transmission that finally will handle the power of the diesel.

The little 6.0 looks pretty good. It is amazing the HP out of the newer motors.

Lastly, I only hope the Ford builds a tranny that works..repeatedly. The E40D is not to good along with the new 4R100. Ford engineers have a hard time in that area.

**On track now. People can also buy the SCA or additive online with the coolant strips. I have found the best place to get these (along with other diesel items) is DIS

Thanks
Mike

Richard,
Do you know of any websites or other forums with more info/rumors on the new engine? I've got a '99 Powerstroke and was starting to think about trading for a 2002. I'm wanting to move to a crew cab is the main reason for the trade. I've always been a Ford man, but the new Duramax is awfully tempting. If Ford has something that competes better coming in 2003, I would be willing to wait a few more months. Of course I hate being a first year guinea pig w/ new engines and transmissions.

Thanks,
Brad

Brad,
If you're a Ford man I think it would be worth waiting for. The specs so far are certainly greater for the new 6.0 and 5 speed but paper is just that paper. You're right about being the first one to try new though. But you're in the same boat basically with the duramax as well. They are not even a year old yet. The thing that I like the most about the new 6 cylinder is it is supposed to outperform all the others and get better fuel mileage. You can find info. on it at www.ford-diesel.com and www.blueoval.com.

Thanks. I've been reading Ford-Diesel.com all morning. I found some info at another forum as well.

Sure sounds good from what I've been reading.

<font color=blue>Ford came out with an ELC this year for the powerstrokes. It's</font color=blue> <font color=orange>orange.</font color=orange>

Does anyone know if the Rotella T ELC antifreeze for diesels is ok to use in 7.3L PowerStrokes? I believe it is orange in color.

I've been told if your truck came with green stay with green if it came with orange then stay with orange. I know pretty simple but if you want technical info read all about it on ford-diesel.com if you have a while. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif After reading for awhile I just figured I'm going to keep it simple. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Yep, that's what the owner's manual says too. But I've always had trouble finding green that says its for diesels. The dealership is the only place I know that carries it. That's why I was thinking of switching to Rotella.

I'm pretty new to TNB but have never found so much GOOD info in one place before!

I changed the coolant in my Dodge diesel last fall and filled it with 50/50 Prestone. After reading this a couple weeks ago I checked with a VW mechanic friend and he gave me some additive he recommended.

I consulted my owners manual and it simply refers me to the dealer or service manual and recommends ethylene glycol 50/50 mix with NO rust inhibitors added because it might be incompatible with the coolant.

I also have a 1981 VW Rabbit diesel p/u I've owned since 1988 and have 200+G's on it and have never used anything but 50/50 mix of coolant in it. The mechanic said he has never seen a VW engine hurt but he has seen cavitation wear in some water pumps of diesels.
