Oil & Fuel AntiFreeze level drops

Ireally can't tell for sure that it's sucking coolant back into the system. If I had to guess I'd say no. It's never full and the radiator is still positively pressurized even after days of non use.

Unless the cap is designed to let coolant back in as the rad cools, I can't see why it should suck coolant back in. When the pressure goes down the cap spring closes the cap seal against the rad neck - and the overflow is above the seal, so no sucking back.

Let us know what you find.

So, a standard radiator cap won't suck the coolant back in? It has the little washer thingy agains the cap seal... Maybe that's my problem.

I should say it vents out the overflow. I've added an overflow (a 1 Qt Oil bottle) it doesn't seem to stay full like you'd guess. See post by RickB. If your filling it up to the rad cap and it's comming out the overflow, that's normal as long as once it comes out of the over flow, the level in the radiator remains the same with repeated use As Rick said, it just the thermal expansion of the coolant.

Update: Bad news, cracked head. The crack runs from the valve seat to the injector nozzle on #2.
New head: $2,000 from our friends at New Holland. Other than that the engine looked good. I got to it before it did really bad things. I have exterme close-ups if anyone is interested.

I sent the head off to RTR machine in PA. (BTW I think the Post office may have to rethink "If it fits, it ships") They use a cold pinning method that seems to be fairly common for this type repair. The cost is around $300.00 which is way cheaper than a reman head. I figure it's worth a try.

Anyone have experience with this type repair?

I made a simple collection jar that is securely:D attached to the tractor frame by a piece of bailing wire. The radiator over pressure discharge will empty in to the jar. As RickB said, If i keep mine full that much will come out when the tractor gets hot and then it gets stabilized with no further belching. If your cap is not holding the pressure then it might do it more. with the simple device at least you can account for the loss to find the remedy. The bottle was an old peanut butter jar.

JC,

Is that jar plastic or glass? I would be hesitant to have a glass jar on the tractor that could crack and fall off and puncture a tire.

That is a plastic peanut butter jar and there is no shortage of it around my house. Couple of feet of bailing wire and the right dia, tight hole drilled on the lid is all it takes to do the job. You can call it a hillbilly design, cheap but effective.

There have been pics posted of this type of repair on this forum. I think Jones6780's head had been repaired this way. I ahve seen several done this way with good results. Did you get the head in a flat rate box.

USPS still has a 70 pound limit, no? Unless your head weighs more than that, they'll be glad you gave 'em your hard earned.

Only problem is, does USPS insure up to $2000? Used to be you had to use registered mail for that amount. Ah.. seems they raised it to $5000 before you have to register.. Good deal.

Okay, Repaired head should be here soon. Now I'm looking at head gaskets. The old one doesn't seem to have a part number. There are three (or six) in the parts breakdown.

Any idea how to tell which I should order? Also, some are marked, "NHNA." Please tell me that doesn't mean New Holland Not Available?
