I am not positive on this but I think there are different thickness gaskets in case you had the head milled. Maby Rickb will see this and give you a definate answer.

I believe you are right. I've read your supposed to measure the distance between the top of the piston at TDC and the top of the block. But you sure can't tell anything by the parts breakdown... Maybe there’s something about it in my I&T manual.. It's been a lifesaver

I measured less than .022in on all three pistons. So I ordered the first on the I&T list that was .018 to .022. The New Holland dealer was less than helpfull on that. Thank Goodness for I&T manuals!

My reworked head arrived today. I haven't seen it yet but can't wait. Kevin at RTR Manufacturing was the most helpfull vendor I've dealt with to date. They do cold stitching on cracked heads. If you have a cracked head give him a call. $375.00 beats the $875.00 everyone else wants for a reworked head! 1 (800) 443-7730 or Cracked cylinder head repair experts. Two steps forward and one step back. The head gasket arrived. It seems to be within .003 of the old gasket. While the numbers on the old gasket are difficult to read, they are certainly not the same as the replacement.

I miced (Miked?) both of them and the replacement seems to be a couple of thousands thicker than the replacement. Do they compress during install? What happens if I have too thin of a gasket? Pistons hitting the head? Talk about diesel clatter! Maybe more compression More power? I wish!

The disconnect in my mind is that the difference between the two options is only .004 in. It's really difficult to determine. If gasket compression works in my favor or if I'm not using the right gasket...

FYI the options are:

1.2mm (0.047 in.)
1.3mm (0.051 in.)
1.4mm (0.055 in.)

The I&T manual calls this the "Free Thickness" Anyone know what that means?

I don't want to break my tractor... Again!

If it is a thin steel gasket it will not compress. If it is a layered gasket it will compress. How much differs with different gaskets. I know with felpro gaskets the thickness they tell you is compressed thickness. I hope this helps.

I'm not sure which kind it is. The metal rings look like the might compress slightly... Which would give me the .047in.

Thinking about it overnight, maybe it doesn't matter that much. The piston doesn't come up past .020in. So it the gasket is .047 or .051 it's still not going to bang against the head is it?

Maybe I'm just being a big baby!

Breaking news. The new gasket doesn't match anything in my I&T manual. the part number for the new gasket is SBA111147260.

I has 1.1 and the last 4 of the PN stamped on it. I assume that means it is 1.1 mm thick.

The NH parts manual lists:

SBA111147230 T=1.1
SBA111147240 T=1.2
SBA111147250 T=1.3

These are all for part numbers for the model 1210 but more closely match what I have.

Theory 1. It really doesn't matter which gasket is uesd and NH superseded all of the 1210 and 1301 gaskets with this one.

Theory 2. Parts lady got her wires crossed and tried to blow up my tractor!

Any thoughts?

I talked with the local New Holland dealer this morning. They say it's the, "new part number." So, I'm going to go for it.

I'll report back.

The factory head gasket leaked like a sieve. Moistly water. I had to pull the head again and install the gasket using Permatex Copper Spray-a-Gasket (TM). It still leaks a minuscule amount.

Also, the ford gasket doesn't allow for the gap between the head and the block behind the water pump. It needs a generous blob of sealant there. I got that right on the second install.

So far so good on the head repair, (Cold Stitch) Little or no smoke on startup and no water on the piston on tear down. If you need a head repaired, I'll post the name of the company who took care of me. It was about 350 bucks 500 cheaper than the other rebuilds. AND they were extremely responsive via Email AND Voice.
