Any advice on planers?

/ Any advice on planers? #21
All right, I give up. What the heck is "snipe". I've known a lot of people who have hunted snipe, but I don't know diddly about the word's use in regard to a planer. Sounds like the ends of the board getting rounded off or planed excessively, but I'm not sure. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

When a board enters a planer, the feed rollers push down on the board. This forces the wood up into the planers blades creating a shallow trough. This trough is called "snipe". Snipe occurs at the beginning and end of the board because of this lifting. It can be sometimes be eliminated by adjusting the bed rollers, but it is the nature of the beast.
