Any bat experts?

I have read that rabid bats in a thick enough group(lots of them together) can pass rabies through their breathing air, from where they are all clustered together and breathing etc.

Moss road thats correct. In michigan they are the No. 1 carrier of rabbies. In fact they take it so serious that animal control will come get them. We were in a store in Mackinaw last week end getting ready to pay when the cashier starts cringing and ducking calling for the owner. I'm thinking ok, do I look Funny, forget to shave or is the Mrs .45 hangin out of her pocket or what ? The owner comes flyin out of the back with a butterfly net and scoops a bat flyin through the store. hmmmm Glad we didn't eat there ! Maybe they should offer to let sammie have a little Bat practice ! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Dave

The Bat droppings can also cause very nasty respitory ailments but I'm sure Doc is aware of that.

Perhaps some small mesh netting placed so as to interfere with thier flight patterns????

Yes they can Egon, primarily histoplasmosis. That's what worries me with my little ones. If it was just a little here and there I wouldn't worry but the things cover everything. Funny thing is I hardly ever see them. I've stayed out at night watching for them and never see the big mass that all the books and videos say you will see. Only see one here or there. But based on the amount of guano there has to be alot of them. I had a guy over this spring. They wanted $2500 to get rid of all of them. I thought that was a little high. So I bought the bat screen, ultrasound and put in the motion lights and kept a 500 watt halogen shing all the time in the peak of the roof where they congregate. It hasn't even slowed them down. I'm at a loss.

histoplasmosis

Bird droppings are a source of that, too. I had a friend who's father had a job as a warehouse maintenance worker. One of his jobs was to clean the pigeon poop from the rafters in the factory. He died from complications related to histoplasmosis. Very nasty disease.

The bats can get in through the tiniest openings. I'm at a loss as to any more suggestions. Seems you've covered most of them. Netting will catch them if you want to trap them, but as soon as you take them outside, they'll come back in. Have you found anywhere that they can come in? Someone suggested the bat door, that you put in where they go in and out. It lets them out, but they can't get back in. As I recall it's like a cloth sleeve or something that tapers to a very narrow opening. Man, what a problem. Is this the first year you have had trouble with them in that barn?

Not sure if this would be practical on a building the size you're describing but it worked for a friend that had a very bad bat problem in his attic. It's basically what MossRoad describes on a large scale.

Poly tarps are secured along the roof line on the wall of the building where the bats enter and exit, the bottom is pulled back against the building about a foot off the ground and about 6" from the wall. Bats will fly down a confined space to escape but will not fly up a narrow passage.

BTW he tried all the ideas you've mentioned and also purchased repellents off the internet to rid his house none worked except the bat door and spending a considerable amount of time looking for and patching possible entery holes. Took about 6 months.

Good luck.

Don't know if it would work or not, but I told my wife about the bat problem. And she said I'll bet if they would get one of those fire place things of clay or what ever they are made of, they make them for looks. But she thought if you would put one of them in there, and no flue, that the smoke would drive them out. And I think it might just work. Nothing likes smoke very well, and it would make them very uncomfortable and they just might decide they could find a better place. It wouldn't cost much to find out. I know I would move if someone was smoking me.

I wonder if they would just come back Dick? This barn is 100x40 and 60' tall at the center. There are four levels to it.

Pitbull I wish I could find where they are coming in but I can't even see where they are going in and out. Everyone says wait until dusk and you will see them entering and exiting. I see a couple come and go but can never see where they are coming from. When the extermination come out to give me the bid he said there were probably 300-500 in there. I said where? He said with that much guano there had to be that many. He sat out here one night and same thing. I see a few once in awhile inside but I can never see where even 10 are hiding but you can sure as heck see the guano. I'm pretty frustrated. It's a great barn but I'm sick of cleaning machinery everyday and cleaning crap out of the barn from the critters all the time. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
