I have cable, phone and internet thru Charter right now. Every 6 to 12 months they increase the price for us "older" members. And they increase it without telling you before hand.

Today I got my bill and it went from $132 and change to $177 and change per month. That is what a house payment is.

Supposedly my last "guaranteed price" had expired, but there was no reminder and no advanced warning.

I now think I need to check out satellite TV.

Up this way we have the usual Direct TV and DISH network.

They have better rates and you can pick better levels (groups) of channels.

But...I have heard both good and bad.

Weather is the big stickler. Up here we have snowfall in the "feet" measurements, not just inches.

Does anyone have advice or opinions on either?

Even when their promotional rates expire, the rates are still below Charter's rates.

And...to be honest, I can get rid of the land line phone (I have no use what-so-ever for a phone. I have a cell phone for emergencies) so I would just need charter's internet service.

Both companies do offer somewhat local channels so I would not miss out on the local news.

Thanks in advance for any advice or input.

We have had Dish Network for over 10 yrs. now and been very happy...We get some snow..not near what you get but we get a good amount of heavy rain and reception will go out momentarily but will come back in short order and while it is out we watch movies we have already recorded on the Dish Network DVR ...if you sign up with them you will get the latest and greatest equipment too...and installation is usually free..check them out

I have Direct TV since 1996.Only loose reception with a very heavy snow/rain storm.I lost my receiver last Sat.due to a lightening strike...called and the tech was here Labor Day with a new one,no cost,I have the protection plan.
I don't really care what it cost,it's cheap entertainment. They are suppose to have the local channels soon,I have and antenna also;doesn't mean much to me.

We are Direct TV and can't complain about the TV service. Like others we can lose it during the most important part of the football game due to weather but that is country living. I have never heard any good about there internet service so that may be something else all together. We dropped our land line several years ago and haven't missed it at all.

We had Dish and it was OK, but when a receiver went bad, they sent me a new one under warranty but charged $14.95 shipping and handling. The next time the receiver went bad, I got an idiot on the phone who decided it was the remote control and he'd have to send me a new one at my expense, of course. Now I don't know much about electronics, but I sure did know for sure the problem was not the remote.

So we changed to DirecTV and it's been OK except they raise the rates once a year (just as you said Charter does). The first time I called and was transferred to a "customer retention" agent who gave me a $10 a month discount for 12 months. The second time it happened, the first person I got on the phone said he could take care of that, but didn't. After I paid the higher prices a couple of months, I got someone who gave me a $20 discount for 6 months.

And later this month is when we'll go round and round again because that $20 discount expires.

To answer your question "Any "GOOD" satellite TV company out there?"; I don't think so.

Really doesnt sound like you have it BAD.........

Dish here for me runs $111 and that is only with HBO not the others

Phone alone is $173 for .05 long distance, 2 cells, internet, and local service..........

The internet through them is $39.95...................

Yes........thunderstorms knock us off the air for awhile but we just change over to NETFLIX..........

NETFLIX is the best entertainment deal going........Download movies INTO your TV and order blueray or DVD........$19

Really wish I could get rid of the ATT stuff for $173......its a rip off for the phone and cell phones............

God bless.......Dennis

I have had Direct TV for about 12 years and can't complain about the service or the prices. The telephone service is very accomodating and helpful. You can get by the automated telephone roll by saying "agent" and you get a real person right away.

One major consideration if you have a lot of trees etc. is being able to get a quality signal to your dish. I have this problem and was not able to upgrade to HD service because of the position of the HD satellite, it requires the dish to be set at a lower degree (towards the equater). I asked the service tech. if switching to DISH would make a difference and he told me it would be even wosre with DISH because the position of their satellites would require the dish to be set even lower than the standard signal DTV service signal.
