Any kind of recourse for land getting logged behind me?

Nature grows back in the southeast like where ye are in Virginia. Stand still around here long enough, and something will be trying to grow around ye laigs and choke ye to death.

Don't worry - be happy.

Or as Smokey the Bear says after a few too many beers: "Only YOU can prevent a forest !"

:D

You let any logged land sit a few years around the South, and it will be lush with green again. The tall stuff won't be there for generations, but you basically can't stop it from turning back to forest unless you REALLY work at it. As long as it doesn't cause a water or erosion problem on you, I wouldn't worry about it.

...or the cutters were just stealing the timber on their own.
I would worry more about this than any mess that they leave...

We had "our" 80 acre view logged a few years back... it fine now except for the three areas that they cleared for homes. We have a running joke among friends when property is logged near by, "Oh, is that where the new Walmart is going in???"

The "mess" I'm referring to would be rutting, mud, brush piles that haven't been chipped etc. I've taken a forestry course at State, and I'm well aware of the general idea of how a logging site should be left. I also work with loggers in my job (I sell tree chippers among other heavy equipment), so I've got that insight as well.

I'm also not an idiot, a yankee, an HOA lover, nosy or any of the other things I've been called in this thread (nor am I backpedaling Dennis). I'm merely concerned about the damage and unkept nature of the adjacent land after a fly-by-night logger tears it up. In no way am I trying to control the loggers, or what happens on his land, I'm simply looking at the options I have *if* the logger leaves a giant mess (see above for definition of mess).

You guys think this is a joke, I feel the opposite. This is serious, I bought a home in the Virginia mountains specifically for the view, and yes I'm upset that view is about to become more barren and cut. You guys are the ones that must be joking if you think you wouldn't feel some sort of emotion same if the land beside you suddenly became a barren logged tract. Yes it may be great for deer, and yes I know it will grow back, but in the meantime a logged tract is by no means as pleasing to look at vs. a forested tract.

Thank you to the few that have provided clear and educated responses.

I feel your pain, some people just have to be nasty in their replies. But, I will tell you what a " local " told us when we we searching for our property in Virginia, " Where you see trees, you will see stumps ". Moral of the story, buy as many of the trees as you can. Don't fret too much, after three to five years it will no longer look like a lunar landscape. Greetings from down the road on the Henry / Franklin County border.

While TBN has nicer people, who are here to share, than the run of the mill discussion site, there are a few people who type things (usually because you've disagreed with their world view/opinion), they'd never say, or say in the same manner, to your face. Reading into what what was written, instead of just reading what was written, is usually the beginning of the descent, as this thread shows. :( These same people typically view their opinion, of what they've read into the situation, as fact. "City people who move to the country all {fill in the blank}." Disagree or challenge them, even with facts, and they think you're stupid, so they re-type their opinion, the electronic version of talking slower to the clearly dimwitted. Still disagree, then name calling and/or masked profanity usually follow, which results in their posts being pruned. Reporting them, then ignoring them is the best response.

I hope your neighbor's logging activity works out to his, and your, satisfaction.

I also hope you update this thread as this saga continues.

P.S.
I forgot to mention one of my favorites, people who use your thread as an excuse to beat the drum for whatever their favorite causes are, which is also on display in this thread, e.g., logging is bad.

Good to remember!

. He chose to use a tractor instead of a skidder because the ground wasn't frozen yet and he didn't want to create ruts..

Good point. Those that are in climates with extended cold periods might be able to reduce ruts by requiring the logging being done in selected months?

Frozen ground with snow cover is the preferred season for logging here. The wetter the site, the more preferred it is.

The big woodlot up behind us was logged in mid-winter. They had a forwarder that shook the ground when it passed--well almost. :) They dragged many truck loads on the same trail for several weeks with that forwarder. Come spring you wouldn't have known it.
