Any lubricant for undoing galvanized pipe?

I've replaced a lot of galvanized when the opportunity presented itself.

Most of it dates from 1922 and if it was not for remodeling... it would all still be there.

Inside is clean as a whistle... going on 95 years!

I've seen that too. Sometimes it's severely corroded and sometimes not.

I'm guessing the quality of water, quality of the pipe and exposure to environmental extremes...

Water is generally snow melt here and the climate mild... freezing temps not likely...

I have had some pretty good luck using my 1800 watt heat gun in areas I wasn't comfortable with fire. Wont get it cherry of course, but it still helps. Not with galvanized tho, in our area it crumbles.

I'm with the group that suggests modifying the vanity to clear the valve.

Any way to neatly notch around it?

Unless I can support the elbow or T my experience is 50/50 as to damage when taking apart.

Sometime the nipple actually crushes.

Well that's a small "group" :)

The pipe is old and if it proves to be aging badly I will probably have to do replacements in three bathrooms. I've already had to replace two drain fittings where they enter the wall due to the galvanized union rusting out.

As far as modifying the vanity that's pretty much a no-go.

It might provide peace of mind to carefully cut out a square of drywall.

This way you can support the elbow to make your change and then reinsert the drywall with a little fixall...

I would just put a couple wrenches on it and see. It is not like it has been sitting in the elements.

Do not screw copper fittings into galvanized. Dissimilar metals cause corrossion.

Nothing wrong with galv, it is just that people don't want to thread it. I threaded lots of pipe in my 20s.

I think you are worrying about this to much, and should have done it.

Just put a wrench on it, crap sake. It is just a pipe, in the bathroom
You act like you are working on a model A car.

Do I have to drive over and do this?
