Any one have a air bag go off??

Back in my foolish days or racing we were taught to let go of the steering wheel when impact is imminent. Then grab your 5 point harness belts with your hands on the front and dont hook your thumbs behind the belts. Now of course there was no airbag, but holding on to the wheel could result in broken wrists as the wheel whips around or broken arms as the arms are definitely not strong enough to support impact.

Would an air bag have helped in my accident. I don't think it would have hurt. And, yes, the big, 'ol, yellow bus acted exactly like a crumple zone. I was heading home - the bus was headed out to collect kids and take them home. Fortunately - no kids on the bus.

I hit the bus so hard - it bent the frame rails on both sided of the bus. Another good point - I never have had bad dreams or PTSD regarding this accident.

Back to the OP concerns. I was 13 years old in 1977 and was launched through a windshield feet and all. Busted up but somehow lived. Fast forward to 1991. At 27 yes old I flunked a chest x-ray. My aorta looked like an egg shell and would have burst in 3 months had I not had this X-ray. If you still feel discomfort you really need to have it looked at via CT scan or MRA. (Like an MRI sort of) it’s the sudden de-acceleration that rips the heart n aorta apart. You may be stopped by the airbag but your insides have not yet stopped. That chest X-ray when I was 13 showed nothing but obviously there was a stretching that eventually would have killed me. Your in Ohio. Lucky enough to have the Cleveland clinic. I am still monitored twice a year just in case.

I was wondering if any one has had a accident where the air bag went off? What injuries did you suffer? I was involved in a crash about a month ago and the air bag went off. I was taken to the emergency room because I thought it had broken my brest bone. It hit me so hard I couldn't breathe. Heart was acting up. X-ray showed no broken bones. I am so sore I can hardly move. Feels like I have a hot iron on my chest. Has slowly gotten a little better.
glad to hear that you are okay! I have had this discussion before and as traumatic as the airbag can be! I always ask okay............would you have survived the accident without it? Can you be sure? How do you measure that? My crash was a side impact and the airbag did not go off! I ended up with broken pelvis and cracked ribs. I would have traded those for an airbag going off ( mine was pre side bag )

That is exactly what an airbag is designed to do - reduce the rate of deceleration of the body in the seat. So having an airbag in the incident you described could have only helped you...plus wearing your seat belt which I can only assume you were not given the year and the fact that you were ejected. Not saying it will prevent all problems, but it will help at least. You also make a good point on getting checked out thoroughly after a very bad wreck.

I did have a lap belt and I was wearing it. That was the ONLY time in my life - I spent time (two days) in a hospital. Lordy - hospital food is SO VERY bland. The wife brought me a big hamburger on the second day. I still remember how good that tasted. Two days while the Dr's ensured all my pain was just strained, stretched, bruised muscles.

Those who think a seat belt is just a nuisance have never been in a serious accident.
