Depends what you are doing exactly and for how long.

I'd like to see 12" or more, but with heavy snow cover ice can build slowly.

Cab door(s) TIED OPEN and no seat belt are an absolute musts. You should have a nice wide footprint and should be fine, but plan for the worst and have a good escape plan.

Just wondering but why would you want to remove snow off of your lake or pond.

Well thee are thirty one schacks on the alke today. add 31 vehicles next to them. Fish are biting 28 inch walleye last night. THere are 5 power strokes parked within 300 feet of each other. 8800 Lbs each .

Do you know this lake pond. Spring fed? Walk the pond and drill a few test holes. carry pics. I mean come on does'nt anyone watch ICE road truckers.

Sylvainl,

If you try it and go through the ice consider that the water presure will keep you from opening your cab door until it equalizes inside and out.

If the depth is deeper than the tractor cab you will probably drown.

I would consider not wearing a seat belt, making sure nothing I'm wearing will snag inside the cab and even carry a hammer to break the door or take the doors off beforehand.

If you just need to clear a skating area how about borrowing a walk behind snow blower?

Tie a float with enough rope onto it so you can fish it out later if it goes through.

Below is some info from the NYS DEC for ice fishing but remember that ice can be much thinner in spots like over a feeder spring or over a current.

Ice Thickness Table Ice Thickness Permissible Load
2 inches one person on foot
3 inches group in single file
7.5 inches one car (2 tons)
8 inches light truck (2.5 tons)
10 inches truck (3.5 tons)
12 inches heavy truck (7-8 tons)
15 inches 10 tons
20 inches 25 tons

This is my rule of thumb for driving a truck on the ice, if I see other tracks on the ice, then I will do it, if I have to be the trail blazer, forgetaboutit:laughing:

I don't know how thick the ice has to be but I did see some pics this week of a skid loader a kid was using to clear the ice to play hockey on a pond. All I could see was the top of the cab out of the water and the bucket holding it from going all the way to the bottom. I don't think the lad's employer was impressed!!!!

That is odd. I was alway told you could do thinner ice on sled than by foot.

Which I know is true seeing how I can sled on water but can't walk on it.

Sled ice drag racing on the river.
