My only complaint with my 8.5' wide similar built trailer is the extra distance I have to stretch to tie down a narrow load.

Ooohhhh.. That's very nice!

CADplans- I asked the dealer selling it about that and he said it was GTG. But that's definitely worth reaffirming with .gov, to be sure. d:^) Jake..

I just purchased a PJ 20' Buggy Hauler that has the wide deck. Only downside is the way PJ builds it with double rows of heavy channel down each side and the diamond plate to add the extra width adds a bit more weight for the size. But am very happy with it. Like you said the drive over fenders seem pretty roughed. I like I can load pallets from both sides. I thought about a deck over but carry a lot of vehicles and didn't like the thought of driving them up on a deck over. When I bought it I was at dealer looking at a tilt deck, but liked the buggy hauler better.

That's what I saw when I was talking with the dealer. The trailer itself is a little over 2300#.
But I reckon ya need the metal to hold yer stuff up off the pavement. ;)
I'm sure they don't just put extra material in it cause they like making less profit. :D d:^) Jake..

I just posted a thread for thoughts on deck overs. I will be getting one. Coming from a traditional bumper pull ~`16', 10k#, wide bed. First, the trailer always worked, nothing special, brakes on both axles.

I like Diamond Pilot's idea with the jack set back. Doesn't matter on a used or in stock trailer. Could be moved, might have to remove or modify a tongue storage box.

Wide will rarely be an issue for you. Use your mirrors to stay in your lane. Test your drive way area for how you might maneuver it. Probably the toughest part is getting around your own place (load and storing).

I really don't like the fenders. They are often in the way -- but, I didn't have a tractor with a loader when I bought it, and the 'new' tractor is questionable on weight, plus barely fits on the trailer. A tractor with forks is better than 4 teenage bulked up boys. Being able to get under a load is so much easier than maneuvering it to get it off (or on). I order bags of concrete from Lowes-Depot already loaded on a pallet. Get home and unloading is easy, plus the load is centered. Hardly ever put much load in my pick up anymore.

And ramps: slide outs are heavy. And REALLY hurt when they find your toes. And the break over angle can be a lot if you are hauling a low car, etc (they tend to be short). Flip up ramps, or flip over dovetail style, seem like a better idea than pull outs for versatility and back saving.

My suggestion, buy a cheaper used one, see if you like it. I hope I didn't repeat too much of what others have mentioned. Just reporting my experience.

If you haven't already considered it, check your hitch rating (most stock hitches -- receivers included -- are only rated to 5k# without equalizer bars), and a brake controller.

Good luck!

When I saw my first 8 1/2 foot wide utility trailer,,, I soon asked a state police officer about it, pertaining to the legality of the width.
His response, now, about 15 years ago,,, was that 8 1/2 foot trailers were only allowed on certain categories of roads.
Such a trailer could not be used on typical rural roads,,,

Hmmmmm,,, I wonder if this is still true??:confused2:

Depends on the state - a quick scan of AAA shows:

DC - yes
Hawaii - 9 feet
NM, NY, TN, TX, UT - 8 feet plus appurtenances.

Also check your balls - many are only rated for 6K! I've seen 10K ball mounts w/ 6K balls.:confused2:

I hate fenders on flatbed trailers. They are always in the way. When you haul heavy pallets of whatever you want them over the axles. Can't do that if you have fenders. Unless you need a low trailer to haul cars or something like that get a deckover.

I've even hauled cars on my deck over, break over was close, but no issues. Long ramps helps.

A while back, I took my car hauler to Shawnee, KS (part of Kansas City Metro). On Shawnee Mission Parkway, near I-435, there was a construction zone. The two lanes was taken down to one, by tall, skinny cones. I entered the zone at 45 MPH, the posted construction speed limit. Bonk, bonk, bonk, bonk.... Unfortunately, for the guy who was just about done putting the half mile of cones up, he had not provided enough room for my car hauler trailer. The tires of my trailer stuck out from the fenders, about an inch. On the driver side, I was hitting the bases, but the passenger side, the tires were hitting the cones just right to kick them about ten feet, to the right. There was too much traffic to stop and no where else to go, so I continued. By the time I got to the end, most of the construction guys were laughing. As I exited the zone, I could see the guy who had set up the cones, it looked like he had just finished! He was not laughing.

I did manage to miss a few of them, that he had put further out. Also, unfortunately, for him, there was a stock trailer about three vehicles back, that took care of all the cones I had left, behind.

If you didn't hit them all the first semi through there would have they are all 102" wide.
