We plant the black oil type for wildlife and a cover/erosion control crop at the landfill we run. Seed companues charge 5 times more for seed than the bird seed we buy at TSC or the Co Op. we also plant birdseed mixes. In some spots for DEQ's enjoyment we plant in rows and then broad cast it on old cells and on topsoil spoil piles. They do great the best theng to ensure even germination is to compact the seeds lightly. The planter press wheel on my Covington planter does this. On the slopes and spoil piles we walk them in iwith the dozer or a cultipacker type roller. This accelerates the germination by about 10 days.

How about an update? I would like to know if anyone put up a scarecrow last summer and had a pos+ result from it. If so, have any pictures of the effective scarecrow. I plan to build one for our ever-expanding garden this year. Thanks.

Why not ask the guy down the road from you and get some tips from him since he's having success?

We grow a few sunflowers in the gardens for the birds. They'll come up in ground that hasn't been very well prepared, but they appear to do better when planted early and in well prepared soil. I ain't no expert, however. I guess the deer stay out of ours because our dog pen is right next to our garden. Now those fearless rabbits are a different story, but apparently they can't climb the sunflower stalks.

Last year we grew the dwarf sunflowers and they did great, and i really liked them because i didn't have to stake them up.

I have a picture of one of them on the other computer and will try to get it on this one. But even though they were dwarfs they had a large bloom.

Now i had a big problem with the rabbits eating the different kinds of greens, I built some traps and when i caught them i took them to my hunting property.:D
