We plant the black oil type for wildlife and a cover/erosion control crop at the landfill we run. Seed companues charge 5 times more for seed than the bird seed we buy at TSC or the Co Op. we also plant birdseed mixes. In some spots for DEQ's enjoyment we plant in rows and then broad cast it on old cells and on topsoil spoil piles. They do great the best theng to ensure even germination is to compact the seeds lightly. The planter press wheel on my Covington planter does this. On the slopes and spoil piles we walk them in iwith the dozer or a cultipacker type roller. This accelerates the germination by about 10 days.
