Anybody have Jack Russells?

The are good squirrel dogs as well. I think every child needs a JRT at the age of 6 or 7 to spend idle hours with getting into stuff they will be right beside you.

I had a JRT named Pedro growing up.Two stories:

1) I never taught him to herd, but he started by rounding up the chickens that got out of my Mom's pen. He would herd my niece's when they were little to keep them from going into the woods. I used this when squirrel hunting by telling him to "hunt those squirrels", and he would run down to the river and chase a squirrel from tree to tree back to where we were waiting to shoot the squirrels.

2) My cousin had a half-grown lab that I played with when over at my cousin's house, so she knew me well. My cousin brought her over to my house, and she started coming towards me to play. Pedro did not know her, so he jumped up and took her down by the throat to the ground. He didn't hurt her, but just stood over her menacingly. She had a deer in the headlight look until I pulled him away. She weighed about 40lbs, and Pedro 10lbs soaking wet.

Our funniest Jack story happened when visiting the wife's folks years ago. My wife and her dad showed horses at one time and after they stopped he had one old mare he kept just because he liked seeing a horse in the front field. So one morning at breakfast we watch our Jack sneak up behind this poor old horse, jump up and hang on to the horses tail. Well the horse goes nuts and is bucking and swinging around with the Jack hanging on for the ride. I swear I thought I heard the Jack Russell laughing the whole time.

The photo is my Dad's JRT - Droopy - with my son, he is one heckuva dog. He is so muscle bound he looks like he is on 'roids and loves to ride 4 wheelers.

One day my dad started to spin up his brush hog, Droop heard the blades start to go and must have thought there was a opossum on something under the deck and dove in head first in full attack mode.

He came flying out the back peeled like an apple with a big flap of hide hanging down the length of his body. The blades weren't turning too fast and my Dad shut down when he saw Droop dive in but he is still one lucky dog. He must have had his head down to boot.

Dad took him to the vet, they flopped the hide back over, stitched him up and you can't hardly tell it ever happened. The pix was taken 2 years after the event.

He is still going strong! All squirrels and other critters have been duly warned.
