No reason to be scared- your 6.4L just hasn't been out long enough to prove itself- which I heard they are are dropping in a few model years, for some reason. Right now I wouldn't get a diesel of any brand and would probably lean towards the Ford V-10 for the "better gas mileage" and cheaper $ at the pump, but saw diesel at $2.15/gal yesterday.

If you go a good deal on your 2008 and you should have, be happy and enjoy your truck!!

I haven't drove my friends duramax much but it was a nice truck and power wise it seems about the same as my 6.0. I have used it to pull a few trailers and they are nice trucks but I don't see one truck being vastly superior to the other performance wise. I know you are joking around and it is fun to rib people about their trucks at times because some people take their trucks way too seriously. The more seriously they defend their truck the more fun it is:).

I agree.. at work we have the gm/chvy 2500's and f250's.. I drive both.. the fords ae louder, and the gm's set lower to the ground... Both pull equipment trailers the same as far as I'm concerned... I'm just not fond of -owning- a gm right now.. driving somebody else's? no problem.

OK now I'm scared. I just bought a new 08 F250 6.4 to tow my horses around. I read a lot of reviews that stated the reliability at 10 out of ten.
The deal I got on it seemed to good to be true. Hope that is not the case.
I have less than 500 miles on mine so far but love it. I took my new truck to Cabela's last week (about 50 miles) and watched it go between 18-20 mpg.

I have owned a lot of Fords over the years an with the exception of the areostar lemon that I bought when I was young they have all been real good to me.

Don't be too scared.. if the truck was maintained.. and you maintain it.. it should be a decent unit..

The 6.4L will be dropped in 6 months. It will be replaced with a new Ford "Scorpion" diesel.

Dealer diesel techs coming back from Ford Scorpion training say it alot easier to work on .Cab still lifts off for major surgery . They all post that the hood is different again and that all the radiators & coolers swing out for engine access .

We have both Fords and Gms here . We are Logging contractors, Snow removal contractors , Concrete contractors & Import / Export auto haulers .

I wonder if Ford offering 3 distinctly different diesels in a mere 4 year span is a nightmare of parts confusion?

I am a small time builder that works with tools & equipment everyday, but I don't do any big box concrete, logging or snowplowing or automobile hauling. :)

Can not be any worse than a car like a Trans Am offered with 3 different motors like a V6, and 2 V8 offerings. All 1/2 ton trucks and for that matter 3/4 or 1 ton trucks are offered with a small V8, a large V8, and sometimes a diesel.

But the first 2 of those diesel engines have been discontinued. The 6.4L is probably the most confusing to me. It was offered for a whopping 2 model years, then discontinued because Ford & IH got their diesel divorce.

Makes you wonder how hastily this new "scorpion" diesel will be pitchforked together. Might be another 6 oh disaster in the works if it's not properly tested.

I was a guinea pig for enough Ford products. Up till 2 years ago, I was a Ford loyalist and still think they make great looking HD trucks, but they don't leave a diesel in the engine bay long enough to gain my confidence. By the time they get the bugs worked out, they dump it for a completely new design.

Seems like they think their buyers are stupid enough to just keep buying trucks with different diesel engines in them every couple years. Maybe they think current Ford owners will want the "next best thing" if they keep changing engines.

"Sucker born every minute" is the old saying that comes to mind.

What you are saying makes no ??? I mean look at all the engines out there that are discontinued like the 302 and 351 Ford or how about the 305 and 350 GM. I have never had a problem finding parts or someone who knows how to work on them.

I totally agree that the engine changes took sales from Ford but I also think GM only offering a Auto and no manual lost just as many sales. I know lots of GM guys who refused to buy the new HD trucks because of the snow plow looking front bumper.

All manufactures have made bone head moves. I guess its what you want. You like the know proven technology of the Dmax. I like the looks and toughness of the Ford chassis. Its what floats your boat.

"Sucker born every minute" is the old saying that comes to mind. Thats how I felt when I fell for the hype of the Hemi 2500 4x4 I bought and then followed up by my Dmax that did not run and sold a whopping 9 months after buying it new. I really took a hit on that one. Got the horrible 6.0L for F-350 and its been in the shop for 5 minutes getting a new dash cluster for a faulty fuel gauge.

By the way my neighbors 2007 3500 Dmax was in the shop yesterday for the same thing it had been in 2 times prior. Something with the egr tripping the check engine light. So they are not so great either. Its been wrenched on 3 times for that problem and also a broken passengers seat and the leaking tranny cooler lines. My awful 2004 F-250 6.0L and my 2006 F-350 6.0L have been in the shop once total with 7 years of total service. His is only 18 months old. Good thing his wife has a Lincoln Aviator 4x4 to get them around in the snow when his truck is back at the dealers. Oh wait, she should not drive it in the snow or all that hard work may blow the spark plugs out of that 4.6L V8. Better park it.

Better watch those flying spark plugs. Someone could get an eye put out with one of those! For some reason my trusty old Excursion seemed to perform the best in the snow and ice we've had lately. It was like the last 2 Suburbans I had, but without all of the squeaks and rattles. I hadn't mentioned it before, but it was my '01 and subsequent '04 'burban that moved me to Ford's SUV. For totally loaded over 50k $ vehicles, I was extremely disappointed with the interiors and lack of power. With a family of 7, my 'family car' options are limited; especially when I only buy 4X4 units.

Both the 'burban and X are beasts in bad road conditions. With either I can go through places in 2wd than many 4X4 units couldn't handle in 4wd. I don't know if it's their weight, wheelbase, weight distribution or all of the above. I just know they go and go. Without power for 7 days kept me running a lot. Boy do I ever regret not buying the 'big' generator I have been shopping the last 6 months! Running two Honda 8k gas powered generators was better than nothing, but fetching gas and running all of the extension cords got old really fast! Now that I have power back I'm discovering that I have major damage to many electrical things from a huge power surge I got right when my power went out. I'm in homeowners insurance purgatory this week and eating antibiotics for pneumonia. :( It would have been oh so nice to have had my 40 to 50k automatic generator to have just kicked in after I lost power. I'll post about it in a different area, but I need to look into getting a 'whole house' line conditioner and surge protector. State Farm is really dragging their feet on the 50k or so in damage I have.

Oh, BTW, I averaged 8.1 MPG in the X running around on the bad roads in the city. I haven't had my F350 4X4 DRW out in the snow yet, but my old Dodge 3500 4X4 DRW didn't do all that well in the snow even with the locking rear axle and all. I don't think my '04 Suburban with the anemic 5.3 got much better MPG. At least the V10 X has power and is quiet while drinking gas like it's going out of style. While towing the 15 to 20k I normally tow with my F350, I think I've been getting around 12 MPG. The truck is a crew cab 4X4 DRW with 4:30 gears. I think I'm running too many RPMs on the highway to get much economy when I'm moving along at 75 to 80 MPH.
